Brilliant holiday.

Not done (but did look into it) - but price probably depends on the mode of transport...bike, car, motor bike, bus.

It would be great on a bike or a bus....

The airfare is a big chunk these days .... £6-700. Possibly a bit cheaper.

I am sure I read somewhere that parts of 66 don;t exist anymore, but you have to fill the bits in.

Like the guy above I have done part of it through northen Arizona and Kingman (home ot the oldest Harley Davidson shop in America, so I assume the world)

Was fantastic and aim to do it myself (on a bike) one day in the not to distant future from east to west

If you are going to do it (and I have no idea on costs) you may want to consider contacting the American Embassy for advice, as a friend of mine did and was surprised by some of the advice given (positive and negative)

Apparently, there are parts of the road that (in reality) don't exist like it was many years ago and also one or two very 'dodgy' areas to pass through

But I think like on all trips you need to keep your head and this must surely rank as a 'once in a lifetime' achievement

Let us know how you get on :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

I did the Missouri part of Route 66 this past summer. It was pretty cool. It really depends on how much you like nostalgia. You can find decent hotel rooms in the western United States for like $50-60 a night.

I did it with 5 others back in 2004 best trip I've ever done and I plan on doing again you can do about 90% of the route but there are certain parts that are undrivable. It is very difficult to follow tho and you have to be careful not to be on the wrong road as it keeps crossing the highway. It is an awesome journey and gets better the further west you get ( in my opinion anyway) we had a detour down to graceland and to las Vegas and did the trip in just over a month. I strongly advise you that if you do it go between June and september as there is so many more activities to join in. It cost us about £900 each for flights and car hire the biggest fee being the one way drop off charge on the car. Motels are quite cheap out of season about $30 -$40 but if you go in season can be anywhere upto $90 but remember motel prices are the same wheather theres 1 or 4 people staying in the room. You'll have the time of your life if you go. Good luck and beware of st Louis it isn't somewhere you'd want to get lost.
