The difference between Mackay & Jones at Blackpool

Mon Sep 19, 2011 1:46 pm

Saturday's game was won and lost (if I can say that for a draw) in midfield.

Two seasons ago, Holloway played 4141 with Adam in front of the back-4 and two wide-players in midfied who joined the attack. Against this, Jones' imprisoned thinking resulted in his one-size-fits-all approach, resolutely sticking to his 442 system. Mathematically speaking they played 5 against our 4 in the middle of the park and always had a player left over. We consequently never got to grips with them. Similar always happened against Swansea; for Adam read Britton etc.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with a 442 formation, as such, last season the ludicrous nature of it for every game, was further compounded when Jones, after the Drinkwater injury, played our most gifted plater, Whittingham, yards in front of our centre-backs and Olofinjana, a defensive central midfielder, just behind the srtikers. Crazy! Again, in the last game of last season, Burnley's "Whittingham," Chris Eagles played in a roving role behind the attackers and again caused us problems.

On Saturday, against Blackpool, had Jones still been in charge, I'm sure he'd still have played 442 with Whitts still in a defensive role and their 5 in the middle would have caused us innumnerable problems. However now, thankfully, we have a manager who is not only perceptive but flexible. As I have posted elsewhere: Malky Mackay totally outfought Holloway in the middle of the park. It was good to see.

Blackpool set up with Ferguson (16) and Southern (4) playing just in fron of their back-4 with Clarke (7), Taylor-Fletcher (12) and Ormerod (10) behind Kevin Phillips. The master-stroke from the Bluebirds' manager was that he played a 4-man set-up (Cowie, Gunnarsson, Kiss and Conway) against their 3 and 'Dick' Whittingham drifted around all over the place and caused Ferguson and Southern more problems than most two other players would have. Added to this our two nominal central midfielders (Gunnarsson and Kiss) also attacked at will whenever the opportunity arose.

In short, Blackpool just couldn't cope. That they scraped a draw was unjust in the extreme. With a little more care a 1-7 or 1-8 score-line would have better reflected the game played on Blackpool's sodden pitch. Yes, it was that one-sided.

If Malkay can get a top quality striker in on loan and get Miller scoring i have no doubt we will make playoffs if not automatic

Once Miller takes up more central positions, and starts hanging off the
back of the last defender, he will score plenty.

the only question being, if he plays that role...

What do we do with Earnshaw?

Bench warmer?
