MALKY MAKES AN INSTANT IMPRESSION
(from today's football league paper)
Player recruitment has always been Malkys strong point, and it's just as well.
Cos when Dave Jones wad sacked

in may the team he built left with him,
Bellamy, Bothroyd, Chopra, Burke, Matthews-almost all of City's big names bailed out on the back of yet another play off failure,
Such was the extent of the summer exodus that when the Scot turned up he could've thrown a net over his remaining players.
"A huge number of players left" says Mackay, "I think it was 12 in the end!!"
"On day one I was looking at 10 players and six kids who had never been involved in the first team, jogging round the pitch. That was when I knew there wad an awful lot of work to b done"
"Even as a player I have never been at a club where 12 players leave in a single summer. Was it hard? Course it was!! But it also has it's advantages cos u can start from scratch.
"So many players left, it's effectively a new club , that means no hangover from last season and a chance for me to build the type of team I want"
So far it's been a blend of old pros like Cowie,Earnie and Miller plus unheralded youngsters in the shape of French striker Gestede and Joe Mason,
Certainly there have been no marquee signings in the Bellamy mould but, after learning his trade at cash strapped Watford, that is not Malkys way.
"I'm very proud of the recruitment process we had at Watford", whose Vicarage Rd gems include Will Buckley & Danny Graham, "a lot of them were lower league diamonds who u have to take a punt on and then try to improve, they were players who werent quite ready but with a lot if potential"
"It's something I've brought here, it's about hard work, it's about people going out and watching hundreds of games, all over the country, it's about filing reports and double checking, us looking at backgrounds, And , once u get the in the building, it's about giving them the belief that they can do the job"
So far Malky has done that, a win at West Ham on opening day with a side that featured eight debutants- set the tone, and after the terrace dissatisfaction that ultimately did for Jones, it has also got the fans on his side.
"The club is huge, the fans are passionate" adds Mackay ," as a player I remember how intimidating it was to come here, they want success, but they realise the size of the job I've had to do"
They aren't daft and they understand it will take time"
They also know that new players take time to gel, they'll make mistakes , but what they won't accept is a lack of effort. That's something I've been pressing home since day one "
Thought I'd type it up for those who won't buy the paper,
But Annis, that don't mean I'll type up your next book lol
