Malasyian passports are very strong, can generally go where they want.

Eddie Johnson had good YouTube clips as did that other American DJ wanted.

I've fucked up knees and thus don't play football.

Still, great scorer at international level. Against Tibet, Myanmyr etc..

Passport irrelevant.

To get a work permit, his nation needs to have an average ranking in world top 70 over past two season, he needs to have played at least 75% of the matches ( injuries, suspension taken into account).

Nowhere near close to qualifying on the first point, so it then depends if an appeal would succeed. Which basically means convincing an independent panel he's of exceptional quality and would benefit the game in Britain.

Therefore, chances of getting work permit are pretty close to zero, needing the appeal to be successful. And in the miraculous case it would granted, who drops out of the match day squad? Miller, Earnie, Gestede, Mason?

No, this is more about marketing than anything else - "we tried to get him in, red tape stopped us..."

I guess we will soon find out if he is any good after his 2 week trial. As for a work permit I dont think there will be any problem otherwise why bother giving him a trial in the first place. I have heard we are offering a trial to another malaysian player as well Mohd Safiq Rahim - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mohd_Safiq_Rahim - video here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNlsLBuS-lk :ayatollah: :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

Why give him a trial? Simples, publicity in Malaysia.

As I've pointed out, there's zero chance a work permit would automatically be given due to Malaysia's abysmal world ranking.

It thus depends upon convincing an independent panel he's a world class talent who will bring benefits to British football. Allowing us to flog a lot of shirts in Malaysia sadly won't help do that.

Is he a world class talent? International goals, Nigeria and Rep Ireland apart, have come against major defensive talents such as Nepal, Myanmer and Sierra Leonne. If you look at their region, none against the better sides such as China, Japan etc. Sure, you can argue that's a by product of the whole Malaysian side being poor overall, but it's going to be very difficult to put forward a convincing argument to get a work permit.

Cracking record at domestic level, sure. That's tempered by the fact Malaysian domestic football is frankly pretty poor.

And even in the event of a miracle occuring and a permit being granted on appeal, do we need him? Miller, Earnie, Gestede, Mason. Which of those would be dropped from a match day squad to fit him in? Maybe rule Parkin out of the equation, since I can't see him having a future with us, and Jarvis who almost certainly will be a fixture with the development squad / loaned out... this Malaysian would have a shot at being what 5th choice in the squad?

Nope, all of that convinces me this is nothing more than a PR effort. "We wanted to sign him, but red tape prevented us...". Makes a nice story, shows we really do love Malaysia, honest guv, without having to commit to taking on a player who'd not make it.

I'd love it if he was good enough, cos A) we got another class player
and B) great marketing opportunities.

However, the goalkeeping and the marking for most of those
goals was shocking
