Boycott of the Goscombe

Mon Sep 12, 2011 12:48 pm

Just noticed a Facebook group has been created called 'City fans boycott the Goscombe Canton Cardiff'
According to the groups creator she was prevented from entering the pub with a collection bucket last Saturday to collect for Ely Trendy's family.

I regularly have a pint there before the game, I'll be sticking to the Foresteers from now on tho, shocking decision by the Goscombes land lady to not allow a collection bucket into the pub, for a matter as important to the fans.

It is not my intention with this thread to sway anyone towards the boycott, just bringing the Facebook group to your attention, I can't link the group to the thread for some reason.

I think it's exactly right that a boycott should be arranged over this. She obviously doesn't appreciate the importance to the community, which any good pub landlord/manager should. I've signed up

It's a chain pub, I think. I remember they did a story on a ban on wearing caps in there, or something, a few years back

i always meet here first for a bite to eat and a pint at around 12ish, 7/8 of us will now NOT GO to this place... we all spend an average of £25-£30 quid before a match in there with food.. thats around £200 quids worth of takings they wont be getting from us anymore.....

they never seem to have a problem with badges being sold in there though!!!

I was in the goscombe when she came in and had just put money in the bucket - quite clearly for Mikey when the bar manager told her to leave. The collector, a girl from Ely was very upset understandably, my mate tried to explain to the manager 'ice maiden' but she was oblivious to the Mikey issue. me and my mate drunk up and left.

We walked straight to the ninian and couldn't believe that a manager of a pub frquented by fans on a match day could be so out of touch with her punters- the ninian was by contrast - superb

well done forum boys :ayatollah:

Just had the following response off the pub chain Gav sounds like the landlady has covered her arse already.

Dear Paul

Thank you for your email regarding the Goscombe.

We are aware of the Facebook page that you mention, and have now had the opportunity to investigate the incident with our manager.

Each of our pubs across the country has a process in place when it comes to people raising funds via charity collections in order to ensure they are bona fide collections which enables us to protect our customers from bogus operators. Our normal process is that we request that every person who is collecting on behalf a charity seeks, and gains permission, from the duty manager along with presenting their charity identification card before they begin fundraising in our businesses.

Our manager approached a lady who was collecting money in the bar and asked if she had gained permission to do so as there was no record of permission being granted in the bar. The individual concerned did not explain why or for which charity she was collecting and walked away from our manager. Our manager requested that she leave the premises when she became verbally abusive as we do not tolerate this form of behaviour in our pubs and bars from any customer.

Please let me reassure you that the Goscombe is a community pub and we support a number of local causes. Had we been made aware that a collection in aid of Michael Dye was being made our support would have been granted.

We have tried to contact the lady who has set the facebook page up to inform her of our process and to discuss how we might engage with the fundraising for the family of Mr Dye going forward.

Yours sincerely,

Kirsti

well this is an interesting one there are many arguements in this the barracuda group do state that they ensure that they only allow collectors from registered charities to collect funds in their pubs, so the landlady/manageress was technically within her rights to stop the collection.
Though i do feel that considering the local influence on this fund raising the landlady should have turned a blind eye to company policy and allowed the collection.
I understand why the company has this policy on fundraising to stop bogus charities and criminals from making money.
Though the letter does sound apologetic I would like to see how far their promise of discussing future fund raising for Mr Dye and his family goes ahead
