Wise words coming from an old man, who has had 4 ex wives and spent a fortune on divorces and maintenance etc, also made too many mistakes to think about.

But something i heard on the Steve Wright show years ago stuck with me, he was interviewing Cliff Richards and Steve asked him the above question, and Cliff said that he'd made loads of mistakes, but he was really happy at the present time and that if it hadn't been for some of those mistakes he wouldn't be the person that he is now, and that's bang on, if you ain't happy now then fair enough possibly those mistakes have played a part in f*cking up your life, but if you are happy now, then that as got to be good enough, Me, I'm as happy as a sand boy, if the mistakes hadn't happened I may have turned into a miserable sad twisted old fucker, so any mistakes I made are now looked upon as stepping stones to where I am now.

Not getting to deep and philosophical now, but I always tell anyone who listens (usually whilst I'm pissed and maudlin) I have two wishes, 1. To die before any of my children and 2. To die with a smile on my first.

Surely if you can die happy, then everything that's gone on in your past is Ok and hasn't dragged you down, I dread dying as a miserable old man, to me it would mean my whole life as been a failure.

And on that happy note.

I wouldn't change anything, absolutely nothing; I had a fantastic childhood, a great time at school, and an awesome time during my teens / twenty's. I made mistakes, some bloody beauties but I don't regret any of them, I simply learnt from them. I suppose I could say marrying my soon to be ex was a mistake, but if I hadn't, I wouldn't have my three beautiful daughters.

So there you go, boring maybe, but I wouldn't change a thing :)

I would of finished UNI and got a degree out of it.

I would of lived with my parents longer, saved up and bought a house - instead of moving out too young and paying rent for years and years.

Above all else, even though I love my son to death. I would of had him when i was a bit older. The last few years have been a real struggle and being super skint 24 / 7 is no fun for anybody!

ELY BOY wrote:What would you change if you had your time over again? I don't regret anything that's happened as they've made me the man I am today but hyperthetically speaking.

1. Wouldn't marry my ex
2. Would have learnt to drive at a younger age
3. Would never have touched booze
4. Would have learnt a trade, plumber, mechanic etc

I think that's it, as I say I regret nothing I have ever done but it will be interesting what people come up with.

Simon you missed ...
5. Shouldve went to Tenerife with the boys back in 99/2000 :D , which also probably wouldve helped you avoid number 1 :ayatollah:

The only thing I regret was not putting the effort in during my 2nd year of Uni. Meant I had to stay on another year to complete my degree. Irony is, if I graduated when I was originally supposed to then I would have made the last recruitment rounds for the career I wanted to get into. And since then they haven't really recruited so have to hang around until recruitment starts again.

So true Gwyn. Are you married now?

I wish I'd had more focus at school. I wanted to become a motoring journalist, and still do, so I wish I'd decided that was definitely the career for me instead of deciding I just wanted to get out of education and into a paid job to fund my habits for drinking and going to football. I also wish that I'd learnt a language as my other passion was to move abroad to Luxembourg, Germany or France.

Can't turn the clock back now though, more's the pity

Plenty of things I could think about my past to change but as Gwyn and cliff said, I'm happy now and without my past I wouldn't be me.

As the wise people before me said, I tend not to regret things, as first of all, there is no point, and second of all, they made me the person who I am today. But, if we're going to be meticulous, I might find a few

1. Would've taken a year out before uni instead of going into something I didn't want to study and dropping out.
2. Would've spent more time with my best friend who I lost recently and would've been less mean to her (this is not really the same type of regret, but I do count it)
3. Wouldn't have started smoking (quit 5 months ago, but still miss it!!!)

I think those are the main ones. Surely, a person can find a lot of things in his life he might've preferred to be different, but ultimately it is those happenings that define who we are and especially where we are right now. Who knows where we would've ended up, had not all these things happened.

*Well, that's what I'd like to believe anyway.

I've had a few, but then again, too few to mention,

I do regret not taking up boxing or a martial art in my teens instead of pissing every spare minute of it against the wall.

Great posts, especially Gwyn's, but i believe in destiny, & what will be will be. Just try & do more of the right things than the wrong, especially the older you get, & you wont go to far wrong. :old:
