Serious question - why is phone hacking seen as the devils work whilst hidden camera's and stitch ups on shows such as Dispatches and Panaorama are seen as quality investigative journalism?

because what is ethically wrong about hidden cameras if its in the public interest?

you can be sure that a lot of phone hacking has uncovered plenty of stories in the public interest! They are both gross invasions of privacy!

The difference is pretty obvious, tbh.

Phone Hacking hacked the phones of innocent people and innocent families who where currently grieving with a loss of a loved one or a loved one that was missing.

If it's so obvious please enlighten me! You can guarantee phone hacking has also uncovered a load of stories in the public interest over the years and that every newspaper has used it at some point! Without a doubt it overstepped the mark and is wrong but it's still an invasionif privacy, just like hidden cameras and tape recorders!

exactly, the only people's lives that hidden cameras are invading are those who have done something wrong, therefore its right that this is exposed
with the phone hacking, this is just a blatant invasion of privacy of people who are not acting unlawfully, just to get a bit of gossip or a news story for the newspaper or whoever
the things these hidden camera's uncover are in the public interest

Do you honestly think undercover cameras and tape recorders have only ever been used on people who have done something wrong? Definitely not! Papers and newspapers use hacking, cameras and tape recorders on ALL stories!!!

i honestly cant believe you dont see the difference and cant be bothered to try and explain any more if you cant work out what the difference is, ethically, yourself

Mate, I know the difference but you are very very niaeve if you think that hidden cameras and stitch ups don't also go on in stories that are not vital to the public interest and seriously think that at some point over the years phone hacking did not uncover a story that was vital to the public interest ! I'm saying people can't have it both ways! They are both gross invasions of privacy for good or worse! My point is The whole area needs to be regulated as at the moment anything goes and there are no real guidelines!

Well the main one is the phone hacking is illegal. Undercover cameras are not.

Now that is very true but again they are both invasions of privacy! I think the whole area needs to be cleaned up!
