Embarrassment for Welsh FA - BBC

Thu Jul 14, 2011 8:41 am

I wasn't too sure whether this had been posted already, but just saw it on the BBC website about the FIFA Rankings!! Wales are ranked 112 in the world, below the likes of the Faroe Islands, Iraq and Sierra Leone (perhaps CB should start looking at our football set-up)!!

http://www.football-rankings.info/

I really think Gary Speed has got his work cut out with this as he is now looking at us being placed in pot 6 for the World Cup draw - what do you think our expectations should be?? In the past I've always thought we've had a good enough side to push for 2nd or 3rd (back in the 90's and early 00's, but now we could find ourselves having to be content with winning the odd game here and there!!

Anyway the real football season starts on 7th August - cant wait!!!!

Faroes are not as bad as they used to be, and didnt iraq win the Asian Cup a few years ago.

Both would probably give Wales a serious game if not beat us IMO.

God knows why we are that low - granted Tosh has pretty much ruined all the good work that Hughes did, we have players who play week in week out in the premier league yet we can't seem to play as a team at all.. I wouldnt read too much into the rankings though as England are ranked 4th after a terrible year for them..

Problem with not looking too much into FIFA rankings is that they are what has got us into the lowest pot possible. They are mockery, granted, but I can't see too much changing in the near future with the current ranking

Your not wrong there pal, not alot will change and I tend to avoid the rankings as seeing some of the teams above us is just embarrassing.. They are so false though, England always seem to be way above their true ranking for some reason.. Something needs to change with welsh football and fast

Yeah, but I can't see what. Toshack did ruin us and if some of our players can enjoy playing for us and come out of the self-imposed exiles they put themselves under when he was in charge, you never know. Or are they all too old now anyway? We could do with a Savage-type player, albeit with more talent. Now that Vaughan's got premiership experience, could he be the answer in midfield alongside Joe and Rambo?

My views on this...

FAW - They don't have a clue, old fashioned and unwilling to modernise. They need to invest in grass roots more & develop a national academy or similar.

Gary Speed - Not good enough imo, we needed to appoint an experienced coach or an excellent tactitian / motivator and i'm afraid to say we got neither. The list was a short one but it would have been better to look abroad for a completely new approach.

Playing Style - We don't have one! The manager needs to develop the 'welsh way' and play to our strenghts i.e fill the midfield and KEEP THE BALL, we have some decent passers of the ball in Rambo, Ledley & Vaughan but can never get the ball to them from defence.

Players - Some lack the passion & dedication required and we have too many pulling out with 'injuries' only for them to play for their club the following week....you simply don't get this with the top nations

In short everything needs to change from top to bottom starting with sacking the FAW chiefs

I was quite surprised by this but since 2006

Wales have played 51 Games

Won 19

Lost 25

Drawn 7

Doesnt look as bad as I though when you look at it like that.. :ayatollah:

We need to play lots of mediocre sides regularly.

It shouldnt matter whether the game is played home, away or at a neutral venue. Additionally it should not matter whether we have a full squad out or a team full of players who are returning to fitness. Such a game may be perfect for players who are not part of their own clubs 1st team and would be considered as "match practice".

This is something Switzerland and Jamaica did a few years back and resulted in them moving up the rankings. Switzerland, from memory, played about 25 games in a 2 year period!

The aim of this exercise is two-fold:

1) Play enough games to have a serious effect on the World Rankings
2) Give International Experience to those who are not normally 1st team players.

Once we are in "Pot 3" we can then have a good shout at qualification.

But we'd have to get players released and this ain't going to happen. It's a British thing, apparently, it doesn't happen on the continent which could explain why Switzerland found it so easy to play so many games

Come on stop kidding yourself - we'd beat the Faroes for god's sake (we're not as bad as the rankings suggest - in fact we'd easily beat most of the sides who are immediately above us), and I don't care if Iraq won some stupid tournament years ago (a long time ago in football terms), they're still shite probably.

I may be wrong here, but I thought I read somewhere that the reason the FAW wanted the exile clubs to re-enter the Welsh Cup was it would help us in the FIFA rankings, now that FIFA were taking into account how CLUB teams as well as International teams were doing in international club tournaments.

the FAW is run by a load of incompent people.

I get the flight to amsterdam every monday over the last 2 months
FAW members been on flight a few times, always first class!!! why.

the flight is 50 mins and the only difference is a curtain being pulled
across the seats behind, i thought we had no money ?.

normal seat about 200 euros, first class 500 + euros.

I know its not a great deal one flight, but over the year it
adds up, do they need to ?.

Spike.

I remember being out in Poland in 2005, sat in a bar in Warsaw with a few flags up, smashing the beer down us.

Few FAW Suits walked past and looked at us like we were shit on their shoe. Fecking idiots mate.

Someone should fax FIFA and remind them of our 2008 FA Cup Final appearance, that should get us above the Faore Islands ;)
