To be honest that does happen, it happened last year to a few mates in Brixton, they were woken up in the middle of the night by yardies waving hammers in there faces.
I personally don't have a problem with squatters in abandoned buildings/offices etc, it only takes a month to get them out and mostly they are owned by investment companies (in London), and the people I know do the buildings up and maintain them / keep them warm with heating etc. People's houses is another matter though.

It is one of those subjects that forces you away from the law of the land.

I watched that program and indeed it makes you think it is more economical to get a gang of lads around to do the business. That is if you have the bottle to go through with it. Why pay on average £2000 to go to court ot get an eviction order, wait for on average 4 weeks ot get it then after evicting them pay more money fixing the mess they have left? Something not right with the system UNLESS the system suits you.

It was comforting to hear the Government are now looking at changing the laws to all of this. The only problem is that these type of people, squatters, always find a way around the law. Sometimes I feel it is situations like this that you have to find out why these guys break into empty houses. Ignoring them only makes the situation worse.

That was extremism that targeted a certain type of law abiding citizen. Squatters target anyone and that could include yourself one day. When I was working abroad I kept my house here in the UK for when I returned like I have done. While away it was vunerable to the squatter obviously. I only kept the basic amenities in the house to try and give an impression it was being lived in. Therefore I had to pay council tax which was annoying as I only came home once every 3 weekends. So the thought of coming home only to find the house had been taken over and the fact the law made it difficult for me to do anything there and then is worrying to say the least.

The law is a joke your right.

I did it the legal way and it cost about £ 300.00 to get the warrant from county court.

Well my Expierence is that Squatters usually target Properties that have been left empty for a while, example being in my street right now theres 16 flats that have been empty for 2 years, why should Blue chip companys buy property in London and board them up, when the demand outstrips the supply.....this squatting law came into force in the late 80s when they brought in trespassing laws for the ravers , ......the rents in west london right now are asrtonomical, our young generation don't stand much of a chance to get employment that will be sufficiant to cover their rent....we need to look at Housing Policy and Immigration policys before we start pointing fingers.

I agree with every word, no one I know who squats would ever dream of moving into a property which wasn't empty, they even do background checks on properties to see who owns them as there is no point moving into a property where you can get turfed out straight away. They prefer properties laid empty by investment companies or local authorities and will hav echecked the prperty numerous times before moving in to make sure that no one is living there or working on the property. They do the properties up and install power/heating so basically stop the properties from becoming damp. As much as I hate paying rent I have never really squatted as want my own space and more security, but I don't blame anyone if they do it properly.
All these horror stories of squatters taking over family homes are just that...horror stories, it obviously happens but it's pretty rare.

They probably do, but they don't seem to use it, there are loads of properties in London laying empty, just being sat on by investment companies for their portfolios.
I didn't watch the programme, but that sounds fecked up. I'd personally smack any mate of mine who did anything like that.

Ii they have broken in then they can be arrested immediately i would of thought, but the law is an Ass. If you came back from holiday and found someone in your property then that is Burglary. If the law didn't get em out i would organise a Forum piss up at my house make sure Sam and Bomber was invited. They would take just one look at them two and ......Bingo job done

Comforting to know if that is the rule these squatters live by. Do the guys you know live by the rule that they will keep the property tidy and respectable while they are occupying it. The guys on this programme didn't play by that rule.

You would pay council tax eventually on it anyway regardless if you lived there or not, if you stayed there regularly you'd pay full. I had a second property and after six months of it being vacant I had to pay half the yearly amount of council tax and I never stayed there once.
