FAO >>> PENARTH BLUEBIRDS <<<

Tue Jul 05, 2011 11:13 am

I am about to move to Penarth and was wondering if any Penarth Bluebirds had tips on pubs etc?

I've lived in Canton for five years or so and usually stroll to the ground via a few well known public houses so Penarth will take some getting used to.

Any tip offs and worldly Penarth based CCFC advice welcome.

the golden lion do a bus down from there on matchdays, as long as you buy a pint.

The best pub in Penarth is The Golden Lion on Glebe St. Owned by the same man who has the lease on The Ninian, it's full of tv's for sport including one in the beer garden and a 3D tv. There's more than one sky box too so more than one sport can be shown. Only a small pub in area but good atmosphere and popular with City fans after the games.

The Railway on the corner of Plymouth Rd & Stanwell Rd has always been Penarth's most popular pub, it's a big pub with a large beer garden but in many people's opinions, mine included, it has been allowed to deteriorate over the years and people still drink in there because 'they always have.' Popular with City fans Saturday lunchtimes before heading into the game.

The St Fagans on Windsor Rd is right in the heart of the town centre, never been one of my favourites but has just been done out and now has Sky Sports in there. Peter Whittingham (when having a drink in Penarth) drinks in there and in The Bears Head which is a stones throw from The Fag and that's a typical Weatherspoons pub.

The Windsor further down Windsor Rd is a rugby pub (nothing wrong with that) with no Sky Sports and real ale as is The Albion on Glebe Street which has always put bands on on a Saturday night. Right at the top of town are The Pilot (Queens Rd) which has recently had new people run it, traditionally was a fishing pub it has Sky Sports, pool table etc and bands on on weekends and The Clive (John St) which is a small pub but with a strong community of regulars with skittles and pool.

All those pubs are town centre pubs and therefore it's easy to move from one to another when out on the lash but most people tend to drink in one or two. I hope that helps and enjoy your time in Penarth.

They did for a time at the start of last season but it proved too much hassle and therefore stopped it

That's a phenomenal intro and a big help.

The Golden Lion looks like it's getting a few new Brains SA drinkers soon.

Thank you.

Except you'll be out of luck my friend. The Golden Lion doesn't do Brains, although it is Penarth's only free house so that might change.

The draught bitters are Felinfoel – Cambrian & Double Dragon and I think he has got John Smiths on Smoothpour. I drink Heineken in there so I'm no expert on the ale, it's all premium lager for me but I'm sure I've got that right.

Depending on where you live in Penarth the Merrier Harriers is the closest for me, great welcome, great food and not badly priced. :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

The Lion is a good shout, nice little pub. The Pilot is good fun on a Sunday night as they live bands and a pool league.

Another place worth checking out is the Ex Service Mens on Windsor Road. This place is not much to look at but can be a great crack on Sunday night! Some good lads drink in here. The club also organise regular trips to the horse racing and away games.

Top House (aka the station) in Cogan is another good City pub.
