Bluebirds to change tack on loan deals strategy
by Chris Wathan, Wales On Sunday
Jun 26 2011

NEW Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay will shun the loan strategy employed by his predecessor Dave Jones.

Mackay has already snapped up winger Craig Conway and hopes to close out deals for fellow Scotland cap David Goodwillie and Middlesbrough defender Andrew Taylor this week.

But there will be no repeat of the wholesale loan signings Jones made last season in a calculated gamble to make the Premier League.

Whereas Wales star Craig Bellamy proved his worth before heading back to parent club Manchester City, there were too many failures with Jason Koumas, Andy Keogh and Jay Emmanuel-Thomas among those who struggled to make a lasting impact at Cardiff.

But new man Mackay – who settled in behind his desk for the first time on Friday – has a track record for young and hungry talent and he aims to sign it on a full-time basis.

“Last year, starting with the transfer embargo, we thought loans were probably the right choice then,” said Bluebirds’ chief executive Gethin Jenkins.

“We’ve taken stock of that and I’d say there probably will be a change in the way we do things this season. We will look at loans where appropriate and if the right opportunities present themselves.

“But we are looking to bring in younger players on permanent contracts.”

Despite missing out on promotion and Jones’ subsequent sacking, Jenkins feels the Bluebirds are in a healthy position.

“We’re in a far better position now than we were at the same stage last year,” he said.

“We were under an embargo, fighting off the Inland Revenue.

“We addressed those issues and we go forward with strong budgets.

“We’ve made progress, but we know we have a lot still to do.

“There is a long way to go, but the small steps are getting the club there.”

I am not a believer of loads of loan players, I only believe in them if we are suddenly desperate for a player, due to injuries etc :ayatollah: :ayatollah:

The more I read the statements of Gethin Jenkins, the more he goes up in my estimation.does anybody know who was responspible for recruiting him?
If my memory serves me right, there were a considerable number of posts expressing misgivings when
his appointment was first announced.
Hats off to those who brought him to the club.So far so good.

I agree and even though he didn't know much about football, he seems to be picking things up quite quickly!

Here's the full interview with Jenkins on Walesonline! :ayatollah:

After all the bullshit we've been fed over the years by the likes of Clemo, Wright, Hammam and Ridsdale it's great to have an intelligent, straight talking chief executive at the helm who is capable of getting the club ship shape for the premiership. For me, he's been one of key signings in recent times. :ayatollah:

Glad to hear this. The amount of loans we had last season was ridiculous.

really glad to hear this,i can see the necessity of the loan system to cover injuries plus having the opportunity to have the likes of ramsey and bellamy but at times last season we had a collection of individuals rather than a team unit and really you have to question if caertain loan players hearts are in it

As you say Annis.........loans should only be needed mostly for emergencies, but I dont mind having a couple of loans if its the only way we can sign a class player(ie..Bellamy) :ayatollah:

The loan policy (Bellamy and Ramsey excepted) clearly didnt work.
However there is an arguement for having one or maybe two young up and coming players who are trying to break into one of the top six clubs but have limited opportunity to make impact.

Taking a formerly established player who is unable to get into a non top ten premiership team let us down . A lot of these teams are barely better than Cardiff so why take a player who is unable to get in their squad?

I slagged him off!!

But the way things are moving forward now perhaps he is taking lessons
on board and evolving as a Chief Exec with the club. if he holds his hands
up and learns from the Shearer debacle then he wont go far wrong. We all
had the fear that he was put in as a front man for the Rugby boys. But
even if that was the case, he's working for Tan now, and Cardiff City FC!!

Ah, so Shearer said he was approached by the malysians; that magically becomes Jenkins' fault in what possible way?

This post by griff :ayatollah: is close to the real picture of what CARDIFF are going to do with the loan system.

I AGREE 100% With griff, and i will be amazed if we do not get in a least 2 young Under 23-21 players.

If anything the malaysians approaching shearer when gethin was trying to finalise things with Malky was in my opinion undermining gethin.
All you can glean from that situation is that ultimately although gethin is running the club on a day to day basis if the malaysians want to take a particular route they will do so without neccesarily involving gethin in the decision.
all that said i think things have turned out right as for me malky over shearer was the right move.
I still believe that we should employ a director of football at the club though so gethin can concentrate on purely building up the business and commercial side of the club which ultimately is his expertise.

I have a slightly different memory of last summer.
At the time it looked like the reasons we took on lots of loan players were:

(1) There were barely a few days left of the summer transfer window when we finally had the transfer embargo lifted and we had to rush to put a team together.

(2) The Malaysians had just paid off some substantial tax bills and did not want to fund purchases. e.g. Routledge and a striker from Everton, forgotten his name.

I also recall that the general feeling on the forum was relief, happiness and great excitement.

ERE ERE, i agree with this at this time i mean i still havnt forgiven the likes of Bywater for his cock up in the playoffs however what does Bywater care hes going back to derby as their SUB keeper thats if he makes the bench. At Players would want to give 100 percent instead of some loanies who are half hearted with the thought of "i dont care im going baCK TO SO AND SO" however some loan sigings that come to the club in hope to get signed permanantly or unless they love the club i dont mind then for example Bellamy, Ramsey etc:ayatollah: :ayatollah: If that makes sense !!

I think Topcat and Warren both nailed it - we dont mind loanees so long as they have a desire for Cardiff to do well...i.e. Rambo, Bellers.

I Believe quite strongly that Jenkins was approached by an agent who told him
Shearer would be interested, and that Jenkins 'bigged' it up to TG, wanting to
look like he had all these contacts.. Of course, TG was ultimately to blame for
almost blowing the Malky deal. But I also believe that sooner than ring certain
individuals about the Cardiff City job, Jenkins was sending text messages and
firing off EMails.

If it is correct that he just sent a "thanks but no thanks" EMail to Robbie Fowler
then he was wrong. Someone of Fowlers standing in the game is entitled to a
phone call, irrespective of his lack of experience.

We live and learn from our mistakes if we are worth a wank.

If he continues to do so then I got no complaints
