Goodwillie latest - Daily mail. (we need to be quick)

Sun Jun 26, 2011 5:25 am

Rangers look set to miss out on another of their transfer targets as Nottingham Forest and Blackpool last night joined the race for £2million-rated Dundee United striker David Goodwillie.
The Ibrox club have already watched Israeli striker Tomer Hemed and Scotland cap Craig Conway slip through their grasp, while the fee Aston Villa want for Carlos Cuellar remains prohibitive. Now Goodwillie also appears ready to snub Rangers’ advances.
Wanted: David Goodwillie
Cardiff City have made their intentions clear to the Tannadice hierarchy about linking up the 22-year-old with former team-mate Conway, who moved to the Welsh capital on a free transfer.
United chairman Stephen Thompson is also expecting to hear from two of their Championship promotion rivals.

Blackpool manager Ian Holloway has long been an admirer of the Scotland international, who struck 19 goals last season, and wants him to spearhead their bid to make a quick return to the Barclays Premier League.
New Forest manager Steve McClaren holds Goodwillie in similar esteem. The financial might of the English game may well be too strong for Goodwillie to resist.
However, the controversial forward, who is preparing to face Drogheda in a friendly for United in Ireland today, has also been told by friends and colleagues that a move to the melting pot of Glasgow would be ill-advised, considering the off-field baggage he already carries.
Goodwillie, charged with rape earlier this year, is due in court this week and expected to be charged with assault after an incident involving team-mates in Glasgow city centre last November.
If he does decide his future lies elsewhere, then it will be another blow to new Rangers manager Ally McCoist, who is a massive fan of the United star’s talents. However, the pain of that snub would be substantially eased if McCoist negotiates a third Ibrox return for Kenny Miller.

Goodwillie def wants to come here,But the Malaysians don't like paying out large transfer fees so this wont be his fault if we don't get him.

At least we're trying to sign this type of player.

Every player has a value to both the sellings & buying clubs, if United want more than we are willing to pay, then the deal won't happen. No the fault of the Malaysians, just business. There will be plenty of other targets.

Moving forward on sound footings. :ayatollah:

I think he will be one that gets away. If he is the prospect that everyone is saying he is we should be splashing the cash. He is a like for like replacements for Chops but younger and both have considerable baggage. The 1.5 million we got for Chops should be spent to get him here. We can get some decent free transfers in (as has been proved with Conway) and we know that there are rich pickings on that front to be made (eg Burkey and Jay available to other clubs for nothing), however the Malaysians will need to spend some money for us to finish top 2.

If the board are making funds avaiable and they are looking to get promoted then they need to spend the money to attract decent players. We need a couple of decent strikers to guarantee goals. The likes of Goodwillie, Maynard, Le Fondre. Ita all down to ambition, a lot of other clubs, Leicester, derby, West Ham, Ipswich, etc are making signings. Forest are now starting to make a move. Promotion does not come cheap. In recent years we have brought in loan players who have been available at the time. We need to have a balance of pickings up a few frees like Conway and then spending money and a few decent players that we need. :ayatollah:

Well someone needs to tell the Malaysians that he will be worth £5m in 12 months time if that really is the case!!!!

I don't think there is a better striker around for £2m at the moment. We would be fools to let this one slip. It has been reported that the board are not keen to pay big transfer fees but we just got £1.5m for Chopra so realisically we are paying just £500,000 for a much better player. Goodwillie is impressed by our set up and we have already signed his former team mate who he knows is more than capable of providing him with the ammunition to score lots of goals, so we will never have a better chance. We need a goal scorer and this lad will score goals for fun. He could be worth far more than £2m by the end of the season. We need to go and get this lad before someone else does.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didnt the £1.5m transfer fee for Chopra go straight to Sunderland for what we owed them when we bought Chopra back off them? Even so I think £2m for Goodwillie will be very good business IMHO, he is a class act and like you say his former team mate is here already and it will be awesome to reunite Conway and Goodie.

this is exactly why I said we should just pay the £2m, before his head is turned.

Yes I believe that it did. But it still came into our coffers first before we gave it to Sunderland. If we hadn't sold Chopra we would still have had to pay Sunderland the £1.5m which we would have had to find from somewhere else. The point being...we sold a player for £1.5m so if we buy one for £2m we effectively spend £500,000. :ayatollah:
