i think ridsdale has got a fair point and both west ham and birmingham will be close to the top of the table right from the start, the teams you mention all went up through the playoffs which may be our best chance of promotion this season, i suppose thats why last season was so disappointing there was only qpr with a big budget and we still managed to f**k it up

And we are still to see the true cost of last seasons failure that will appear in the clubs accounts when published towards the end of this year.
Yesterday FL clubs agreed at the Football League AGM in Cyprus to adopt the UEFA Financial Fair Play system in one form or another. League 2 clubs started last year by capping the player wage bill at 60% of revenue and this will now reduce to 55% of revenue, League 1 clubs are now required to apply the 60% wage cap.
Championship clubs have agreed to implement the UEFA Financial Fair Play system for season 2012-13 however they are now going to work on a format which will be workable in the division. UEFA FFP basically requires clubs to balance their books each season or to "break even".
Whilst we all get excited about new managers, new players, new season and thedream of one day our club playing in the PL, as a club we now must give consideration to these UEFA FFP regulations as if we all hope we sign players rather than go down the loan route this season.
To be able to service our current debts, pay our players and pay all other costs in running the business our club should be setting a player budget of £10m and no more, to even consider a budget of £20m is in my opinion crazy unless the balance is given by our owners in the form of a gift or further investment in shares.
Next season TV revenues for FL clubs will drop by 25% all clubs including ourselves need to recognise that fact and start dealing with it now.
This thread has had a high number of hits but few comments I suppose talking about cost cutting is umpopular but we all know owners unlike fans are not around that long. As fans we should be worried about the longterm stability of the club.

The money at the time may have gone on other things, but this for me is the 1st sign that things are not right.
We have to get a root and branch system in place, but then again i thought we did that when put in place our CEO - GJ

THE DON wrote:Size and budget do obviously matter. Installing the right man to use the budget carefully matter equally. The appointment of the new manager is massively important. Get the right guy who can spend the money wisely and can handle the pressure we should be fighting for promotion again. Pick the wrong guy who wastes it on overpaid loanees, past it premier players and injury prone journey men and we going to be midtable and calling for another new manager.
For me the new manager needs to be someone who has handled a budget like that before, ie Hughton or Di Matteo.
