RECOMMENDING A CARAVAN AND CAMPING SITE

Sun Jun 05, 2011 8:47 pm

We just got back from ten days up in Ashbourne which is in Derbyshire at the foot of the peak district, great base for touring around and the scenery alone is well worth visiting for.
Anyway, to any of you into caravan or camping type hols and especially if you have kids, the Callow Top site in Ashbourne is well worth a stay, great pool, club house, pub on site and loads of space for kids to run safe and free.
There nowt wrong with this country if we just get a bit of sunshine, feck me, I am turning into my father.

There's this lovely little small beach just down the road which is perfect for taking a bottle of wine and two glasses down to watch the sun set in the evening. Plus, Bournemouth is only a matter of miles away and a decent night out. You'll love it!

you have to be carful these days with pricing,
i hate there sites that charge for everything
i look for a flat rate site that charge for a tent and thats all
not there rip off merchants that charge X amount for a tent then X amount after the first 2 people +extra for a dog and cars or minibus

hang on if i bought a tent to accommodate 8 people i cant get them all there in 1 car i need two or a bus

me n my tent (12 x 3.5 x 2.1mtr) :D

more sites i have used coming up

first greenways, down in the mumbles (yes but its not full of jacks)

http://www.greenwaysleisure.co.uk/

up above oxwich bay by the old oxwich castle, lovely place to go walking,
the site has a clubhouse that other than bingo and karaoke on busy times does nothing other than provide a watering hole, not that that bothers me if your away you make your own fun. nice size toilets with a nice wash area.
there is a small outdoor kidney shaped pool ideal for that cooling off period,
they have a laundry area down among the static caravans also a holding pen for peoples boats.
the camping area in generally flat and divided into three fields (family field) infront of the toilet block and closest to the entrance, pool, club house and park., (noisey field) field behind the toilet block where they tend to put young groups and same sex groups, (dog owner field) as it says on the tin :),almost as close as the family field to everything.
there is an icecream van that comes around in the evening, and there used to be a mobile shop van that sold fresh meat n salad stuffs along with all your general items (not sure if this is still running)

downfalls
it dont have a club shop,
if you want to walk down to the beach its a steep incline
beach carpark is cheapish if you cant find a space in the village for free
there is only 1 pub (oxwich bay hotel)and 1 shop in the village so your treated as captive audience
the nearest shop is back to the main road turn left and drive for about 1.5 miles a petrol station (good shop and good prices, worth travelling)
attached is a picture of oxwich bay at dawn

all that said i have just noticed they have changed their pricing policy, see why do people get greedy
dont they know the lower the price or the less you have to pay for the more it will be used

Small 1-2 berth tent with 1 car (Max: 1 person) L £11.00 H £13.00
2-3 Berth Tent with 1 car (Max: 2 people) L £15.00 H £16.00
4 - 6 Berth Family Tent with 1 car (Max: 6 people) L £17.50 H £19.00
* Over 6 Berth Family Tent (6+ people) L £19.00 H £20.50
* Additional persons @ £3/£4 per night (6 people included in price)
Trailer Tent L £19.00 H £20.50

Next bank farm, horton overlooking porteynon bay.

http://www.bankfarmleisure.co.uk/

this place has it all, shop, laundry, pub, sky tv, playground, indoor/outdoor pool, very good toilet blocks, loads of room
a takeaway type cafe area, wher ethe cool kids seemed to hang out, on the pull lol

downside,
pitches are very open (last time i was there out tent was bashed about breaking 3 poles, mind we did put it up in the middle of hurricane ivor  )

again the beach is down a steep hill (bus service available) also a pay and display carpark at the bottom of the hill about a mile. once down there mind if you have a bike carrier and kids its as flat as a pancake to riding into porteynon and beyond, wear them little buggers out :)

Again though one of these places that charge for everything

Another nice campsite near Horton is Port Eynon's Carreglwyd, no pools or playgrounds and the like but you can open your tent door and just about step onto the beach. Lovely location :D

If you go thru Brecon around the top road up by the leisure centre and swimming pool its on that main road, carry on that road and you come back out on the new by pass road just up from that Bryn Mynach site.
