MANCHESTER CITY are weighing up whether to rip up the contracts of FIVE senior players just to get them off the wage bill.

Boss Roberto Mancini was told in Abu Dhabi last week that he needs to trim £1million a week off first-team squad salaries.

The Italian has decided the likes of Craig Bellamy, Wayne Bridge, Roque Santa Cruz, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Jo are not in his plans.

The five, all bought by Mark Hughes, are now worth a fraction of the £68m they cost. City do not want to loan out stars as they did last season with Bellamy, Bridge and Santa Cruz, and have done in the past with Jo, because other clubs expect City to pay most of the wages.

City would prefer to give them free transfers. Bridge, 30, and Santa Cruz, 29, would cost more than £18m in salaries.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, 29, has a year left of a £60,000-a-week deal, and Brazilian Jo is in a similar position on £55,000 a week. Bellamy, 31, spent last season with Cardiff.
