Chris Hughton fills me with the least enthusiasm and I really can't understand all the fuss over him coming here. I can see us being mid-table at best under him. Di Matteo is the one for me if, as looks likely, O'Neill doesn't come here. I'd have Curbishley over Hughton every day

I think Hughton would be a good appointment. He has experience in the premiership and championship and he managed to gain promotion. He had the support if his players. He was unlucky to be sacked because at the time Newcastle were mid table and getting stronger with some notable wins including Arsenal away.
In comparison Di Matteo inherited Paul Inces squad at MK Dons, managed to get WBA promoted behind Newcastle and then got sacked when WBA were in free fall in the premiership.

Hughes, Di Matteo, Hughton or O'neill
Anyone of these four I'd be happy with.

The same could be said of Hughton in that he, too, inherited a good squad. I also think that the reason he had the support of the players, which is also the reason he did so well with them, is that he had been at the club a long time and knew it, and the players, inside out. He was always likely to have their backing. If he comes here, will the players like him like they did there? OK, he has premiership experience, but only up until he got sacked. Yes, I know that the same could be said of Di Matteo, but I think he would do better here than Hughton. Only my personal opinion, of course. But, if we're looking for Premiership experience, of the 4, Curbishley would be the obvious choice. But then, he's been out of the game a long time.
Decisions, decisions....

Hughes isn't an option
I don't remember seeing this in the Press.
I've noticed a few other teams fans have linked him with us

Fans and the press can link us with whoever they want. I think common sense and football knowledge would suggest Hughes isn't going to resign a very good job at a Premiership club, when another is available, to come down to an underachieving Championship club. And anyway, if we can't afford O'Neill's wages, which is what is being suggested in the press, how could we afford Hughes' wages?

Hughton was only at Newcastle a year before becoming manager.
