You just need to be really unhelpful, obtrusive and give shocking service. Also before you answer any question make them wait for 30 mins then say sorry I can't help you with that.

Follow my advice and you'll fit in just fine.

Civil Service interviews aren't heavy going. Every question will relate to whatever you put on your application form. There won't be any hypothetical questions sprung on you that you could never revise for. Just make sure you talk about anything that you wrote on the application.

Good Luck. You'll need it if you want to work for those idiots and leave your personality at home if you get the job or you might scare them. ;)

Interviews are all pretty standard these days. They nearly always ask you to give an example where you gave excellent customer service or problem solved using your own initiative.

It's always handy to do some reserch for example what tax area do they cover along with the name of the head man etc.

cheers havnt been to an interview for around 5 years now and all work i did before hand bears no relevance to what type of work i am applying for today as i was basically manual labour. finished 3yrs in college last year which came to nothing as i cant even get a job in the industry i studied for been looking since the end of last summer and this is my first interview a bit nervous.

Just relax, go in full of confidence and sell yourself even it's bullshit you're telling them.

Good luck :ayatollah:

Is it for the contact centre, or just an administrative department? The interviews for each in hmrc are completely different

I don't work for HMRC but if you want a good tip on formatting replies to 'situational' qestions (i.e. that involve "tell me when you did....") then you should use the STAR system to format your reply. This way, your reply/example will be logical and easy to follow. The interviewer will be looking for clear, confident and valid responses, so DON'T bullshit (you will be caught out) and try to link in to information provided on your application. They usually like the idea of 'teamwork' too, so include some 'we did together' replies....

S - Situation (What was happening)

T - Task (what did you/team need to do)

A - Actions (what did you/the team do to rectify/change the situation)

R - Review (what were the resulst and how did that affect you/team/other party)

Although I cannot guarantee HMRC interviews are set out this way, many major businesses (inc. Governmental Depts) have adopted a PQA (Personal Qualities and Attributes) system of recruitment and it is a recognised formula where this system is adopted. You might also like to look at the HMRC web-site for clues....

Good luck and let us know if successful.... :ayatollah:

Great place to work. Various on site shops. Get your car serviced while you work. Holiday clubs, hairdressers. Very good cafeteria and plenty of parking. Had it as a base many years ago. loved it.

No cafeteria, no hairdresser. Only 'onsite' shop is an overpriced sandwich / coffee shop which is more expensive than Marks & Spencer and Starbucks which are 250 yards away, parking is a nightmare although if you're working til 10 I assume you'll be starting at 5 so not gonna be an issue.

Trust me, I've worked there for 22 years

Very true, it has changed.

I do miss it there very much though. I loved it there, compared to the place I am now.

Good luck with the interview- I left about 3 years ago on my own accord due to management problems!

I worked in a seperate department to the contact centre but all our work has now been passed out to all office wings it seems.

5-10 shifts can lead to full time stuff. Few mates started on them shifts and been full time for 4 years or so.

Hmmm I retired from there about 20 yrs ago. Don't tell me they sold off some of the car park. It was always a pleasure knowing I wouldn't have to worry about finding a parking space.
