Lee Naylor

As Ive posted on another thread this morning, Lee Naylor is, in my opinion, a defensive liability. But the abuse he suffers is a bit unfair and harsh. He reminds me of Spencer Prior, Richard Langley and Rhys Weston. The type of player the crowd jump on for simply putting a foot wrong. He is just trying to make a living, as we all are, but he is harangued at every opportunity. Even when he had a good game against Stoke, the praise he had was grudging.

I know he has no pace, and Ive said in another thread that opposition managers will exploit that. Reading exemplifies that - at the Madejski they used Jobi McAnuff, last night it was Jimmy Kebe. That is not Naylors fault, its the manager. It is DJs job to manage and protect his squad. By continually playing Naylor, Jones is putting out a team with a glaring fault and also throwing Naylor to the mercy of the baying crowd.

On the flipside, some players can do no wrong. Kevin McNaughton is having a stormer at centre back, but during our poor run over christmas, and against Bristol City where he was caught out for two of their goals, he was as bad as anyone else. But people dont get on his back.

It seems to me, if your face fits, it fits. If it doesnt, youll never be liked even if you turn into Paolo Maldini overnight. Im sure it hardly helps with Naylors confidence when the crowd is on his back from the off.

So, if DJ insists on playing Naylor, we've got to get behind him and support him, rather than spew vitriolic abuse at a guy wearing the blue shirt of Cardiff City.

Spot on, readings second goal was kevs fault yet naylor gets the blame.....naylor had 2 men running at him and he did the right thing and closed the man with the ball.....bellamy doesnt help him in defense, he only works hard in their half of the pitch.....naylor isnt the best by a long shot, yet he wears the shirt so gets my support, its not as if hes doing it on purpose!!

I have some sympathy with Naylor because Bellamy is so far forward he often can't help his left-back out.

However, the way he gets so easily beaten in one on one's by the oppositions right-wingers is becoming a concern.

Finally I would offer up Hudson as an example of a player who wasn't univerally liked, but has won over many fans with his dogged determination. It is true we are demanding fans, but also fair to.
