CARDIFF CITY have called a board meeting today in the wake of yesterday’s 3-0 hammering at Bristol City.
The defeat – which came only four days after a 4-1 thrashing at Watford – dropped Cardiff from second to fifth in the Championship – their lowest position this season.
To make matters worse for Bluebirds fans, arch-rivals Swansea City moved into second spot courtesy of a 1-0 win over Reading.
The board meeting – which will feature Cardiff’s billionaire owner Vincent Tan on conference call from abroad – will put boss Dave Jones’ position under the spotlight.
Jones faced the fury of angry Cardiff fans on messageboards last night, with many of them wanting him to quit.
But when asked if he felt the pressure was mounting after the Ashton Gate flop, Jones snapped: “We’re only halfway through the season – it seems if you’re doing well you get put under pressure.”
Former Blackburn, Bolton and Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce would be expected to top any list of potential successors should Jones leave the club.
Despite being able to recruit high-profile signings such as Wales internationals Craig Bellamy and Jason Koumas and having an array of attacking talent, Cardiff have faltered badly in the last two months.
Cardiff’s slide started with a 1-0 derby defeat to Swansea – the Bluebirds having taken eight points from the last 30 on offer.
Jones has stressed the need for recruits in the January transfer window and Cardiff last night completed the £100,000 signing of Preston striker Jon Parkin.
The 29-year-old agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal and will be eligible to face promotion rivals Leeds United on Tuesday night.
But Cardiff have missed out on defensive target Andy O’Brien, who has chosen instead to join the Bluebirds’ Yorkshire rivals from Bolton and could be eligible to face City on Tuesday.
