The Las Vegas Welsh Derby

I thought this story would amuse some of you and help to provide some positivity after some doom and gloom!

Last year I decided to take a career break and coached football in California for the summer. Thankfully, the boss of the coaching company used to work in Llanedeyrn High School as a P.E. teacher and was a huge City fan! He sorted me out all summer and put me on all the nice camps in California! We also did some camps in Nevada and the camp everyone was desperate to do was the one in Las Vegas. As luck would have it I was put on that camp along with a Swansea City supporting coach. During the week in camp we were supposed to divide the kids into teams and have a kids world cup but we instead split them into Cardiff and Swansea teams. All week they had to come to camp dressed in either blue or white and with their faces painted with a bluebird or a swan. We set them homework to find out the history of the clubs and to look on youtube for clips. The kids really bought into it all and loved the rivalry. By the end of the week we had them doing the ayatollah and the swimaway to eachother. It was great fun but I had to restrain myself from clipping a kid around the ear when he did the swimaway to me!!! Anyway, on the last day of camp we had a welsh derby game between the kids. All their parents turned up in blue and white and even made banners with the clubs crests on them. It was an amazing occassion, made even better by Cardiff beating Swansea 4.1!

I have kept in touch with one of the parents of the kids who acts as their team football coach. He sent me an email today to say that some of the kids continue to follow Cardiff, and watch them when they are on tv over there. A few have even ordered replica shirts!!!! One kid in particular was an excellent player and he is now with an msl development team so nice to know he will grow up as a Cardiff fan!!

I tried to copy and paste some of the pics from the Las Vegas Welsh Derby so you could see all the kids in their shirts and with the banners and their faces painted but it wouldnt work, if anyone knows how to do it please let me know and ill post them! :ayatollah:

I tried out for a job similar to that. Didn't get it. Was gutted. Your company wasn't called elite soccer was it? Cos one of the coaches who was running the interview was a Jack.

Sounds like you had fun. Great that football is taking off over there and you've created a few City fans. :ayatollah:

Phatfrog - was amazing mate, best thing I've ever done! Company is called Challenger Soccer and the head of the California region is Gwynn Williams! Check out their website and apply, you'll have the time of your life! 3 hours coaching in the sun in the morning, afternoon on the beach, night on the town every night!
