Mate, times are tight for all. I've just started a freelance writing business and even though business is steady because I can't guarantee work for the next 12-18 months I don't know if I can afford a season ticket next year, even if we make the Premiership! Hoping circumstances will change in the next 6 months though! Might have to live in a box or something instead! :ayatollah:

If you don't mind me asking, what exactly is a freelance writing business? Pardon me for sounding daft by I'm always interested in entrepreneurial ventures.

Are they stopping EMA in Wales? If so it will only get worse.

I act on my own but under the business name of Steve Day Writings. I have 2 main clients right now who I write for (basically write web articles, one is a travel accommodation site - ukholidayplaces.co.uk and the other is a company that shells out poker and gambling articles to sites and magazines). I am looking for an elusive third party which would take me into the wealthier echelons of paid employment but right now I'm just about cutting it. I was working at the Council but the pay was the same as I am earning now and it was way less fun, plus a lot more hours.

It's tough though. There's always the financial uncertainty which is a stress that doesn't go away but I'd rather this than do something I hate for a bit more money. If you have any more questions or want to talk more about it give me a PM Tony. Always happy to talk to you. :ayatollah:

Cheers Zabier. I admire people who take the gamble to start up their own businesses because it is something that was always beyond my capabilities.

Going slightly off I was wondering if you should enter next years apprentice competition where you could end up working for Alan Sugar ;)

In all fairness the EMA systems a bag of shit anyway  I don't get it because my parents worked hard enought to get jobs where they are payed over the qualification amount for EMA, Does that mean the can afford to give me £30 a week? No it doesn't, my parents are not superhuman. They, like everyone else have morgatges, loans bills and various over payments to make, so people like me and Cwmbran-blue are left to find our own ways, in a society where it's becoming increasingly harder to find a f*cking job

I'm probably going to live very tightly for 3 months, and get it with my student loan in January (University). Only way I can afford one at the moment. No part-time job = poor me.

Very well put for a young-un!

The EMA System is completely unfair from what I have seen. The parents that work for a living and barely make ends meet, are punished for doing so! Unbelievable! I may well be generalising, but those that are doing nothing at all, are getting money for doing nothing at all! (Before anyone has a go, I am well aware that there exceptions to the rule that I have not commented on, I am however, commenting on those that sponge off the rest of us for no good reason.)

I can understand your point of view, but surely what the parents have done (or not done) is not the fault of the child? EMA is paid directly to the student not the mythical sponging parents, so I see no point in tarring the child student with the same brush whent the truth could be that they are working their hardest to break away from the poverty trap their parents are in.

Is having a free education not enough though? (don't the ones that want to be there just attend because they want an education?) I find it hard to believe that these young people need £30 a week. What for exactly? Everyone I know that doesn't qualify can't afford to give their kids £30 a week, and even the ones with part time jobs, don't earn that much!

Work with those pricks? No chance! Besides, I'd get dominated! :D

Claire, I do agree with your thoughts. Like you said, there are exceptions to the rule but in my view the EMA is often just spent on booze, not getting the books or stationery needed to 'survive' at school. As you said, is free education not enough?

We never got the EMA in school and because of that a large majority of our school were in part time jobs by the time they were 16 at least. Now I rarely hear of a kid in school with a part time job. It's a shame because the no gooders are tarnishing the reputation of the most exciting generation of youth in decades.
