Who Would You Choose To Replace Jones?

Thu Dec 16, 2010 10:38 am

I am not a fan of all this 'sack Dave Jones' talk. I feel this is his last season. I said it at the start and I'm not prepared to change my stance, especially given that we're 2nd in the table and on better schedule than last season. However, playing Devil's advocate, I would like to know who you all think would be a decent replacement for him if he was to go?

I'm not really sure who we could hire. I quite liked Gareth Southgate as a manager. Could have showed more passion but he's a good tactician and knows what he's talking about.

Would Sam Allardyce drop down a division? I've heard rumours that he's fed up of the big time now and wants a challenge with the possibility of winning trophies. If he won't be hired by the big guns then maybe he'd fancy stepping down a division and starting a legacy with us? He has done stranger things!

Gus Poyet seemed to be the favourite last time this question was asked. I personally would like Sean O'Driscoll but apparently he would cost £1m in compo.

As a complete wild card would anyone go with Dean Holdsworth? He's turned Newport County around and is not exactly an unknown name.

Paul Lambert would be my choice if we could afford him

I posed this question on another thread, but it remained answer-less last time I looked when I asked for constructive ideas on a new manager instead of all this sack Jones talk with no credible alrernatives

A good question is why has Curbishley been out of work for so long?

Last time he was asked about things he said he hasn't been offered a job that appeals to him. That was a while ago though. Maybe he's happy with doing his media work?

Couldn't see this one appealing to him, either

Hughton without a doubt. He has proven that he can gain promotion from our division and hold his own in the premiership plus his wages are cheaper than what we currently pay Jones. I have also seen Hughton make substitutions that have actually managed to change the outcome of a game unlike DJ.

Sam Allardyce

No harm in asking though...I appreciate Dave Jones, particularly for that cup run because I've always loved watching City in the FA Cup (probably down to cup run in '77 with Tottenham, Wrexham and Everton), but he is paid stupid amounts, he does have a squad on mega bucks, the facilities that he himself asked for and is failing to inspire the team to the heights that it should achieve.

Yes we are 2nd but that is because everybody else has failed to capatalise on our failings so far, this squad should be top, not going on a run of 1 win in 7, we should be out of sight due to these other teams failings. Even when we were on a good run we looked far from convincing in most of those matches but I appreciate it takes more than pretty football to win a game at Championship level.

The stat regarding Cardiff's ability to come from behind under DJ should be enough to work out that if Cardiff don't score first Jones hasn't a clue. He obviously holds contempt for Cardiff's fans and would've been well advised to keep that under wraps and would probably have been viewed with hero status by now if he had.

Offer Curbishly some transfer money and a couple of games before January to assess what he needs and I think he would bite our hands off. That's my opinion , I appreciate yours too. There is something to be said for continuity and that is the reason we have improved year on year, I just can't see DJ clambering over the final hurdle. :(

Occasional Violins, I agree with what you've said but I don't think that the City job would appeal to him because, in all probability, he's been spoken to about jobs in the Premiership since leaving Charlton and has yet to take up any position. Christ, there must have been at least one or two that would have appealed to him. So, if it's not him turning them down, maybe he's not been spoken to and club chairmen are avoiding him because there's something about him they don't like, which seems unlikely.

Curbishley, Oneill, Allardyce, Paul Jewell, odriscoll, Lambert, Poyet, ..... I'd even have my dog ahead of DJ! Surprised there has been absolutely no talk of Toshack! I wouldn't personally want him but he's a Cardiff legend with a decent managerial record who is available!

Doesn't Toshack lack the required coaching badges?

I recall something about him being able to coach at International level but not at club level because he had failed to sit the required exams.

Was listening to talksheit earlier and a few Scouse fans on there were touting him for Liverpool. I think we've missed the boat there with the tangerine madman - fecking luv him though he would suit our club down to the ground.

Top Prem players? As in who exactly? Eddie? Etuhu?

Don't tell me you're claiming Bellamy solely down to DJ alone...

No or little budget? Our wage bill which exceeded income says "Hi, welcome to Planet Reality"
