Very proud to say that I was in the Tower working today for the last flight of the Harrier jump jet. Really sad to see it go and think it's a mistake to get rid. Hope you all watched the news with the Harrier showing off its full range of moves and even doing a bow. Very sad when the Station Commander landed the last one for the last time.

Didn't know much about this until I saw a news story on it. Seems to be a stupid decision, as I heard it mentioned that its modenrly equipped. So essentially nothing wrong with them

Better for bombing and close air support than the tornado however there are more tornadoes so they are being kept as to get the Harrier up to Tornado numbers would take too long. Spending savings have to be made now.

So whats happening with the fleet? Whats left?

Ian, pretty much f**k all.
The only thing that will fly off our one remaining carrier (which it was announced today will be retiring in 2014) are helicopters.
So the Fleet Air Arm is effectively dead for 10 years - and longer, as far as I'm concerned, because these new Joint Strike Fighters that are meant to be coming in to replace them are already massively delayed and won't be in our possession until after at least one of the two new carriers is built in 10 years' time. It's just madness and we're lucky the Argies don't have any boats to get their Army over to the Malvinhas else we'd be buggered.
This scepter'd isle is no longer the world's greatest naval power, which has been her pride for centuries.
In fact, this isle is nothing, in the grand scheme of things. If we were obliterated from the face of the earth, I doubt that the rest of the world would care too much. Europe don't like us, the Yanks don't need us and nobody else is close enough to care.
