Re: Why can't we have a leader like Berlusconi..?

Sure he is a character, but he is also one of the most corrupt politicians in the world. I know our politicans are hardly angels, but I really think a man of his level of corruption would undermine this country so much.

You cannot compare Tony Benn with Silvio Berlusconi.

I am no socialist, but Tony Benn stands for principles. Indeed, he is a character.

Silvio Berlusconi, on the other hand, is in power to protect/further his business interests and personal position. He started his business in real estate in Milan, coincidentally in the same period when mafia figures expanded into Milan. As a young man with no obvious source of capital, he developed vast projects. Inevitably, some have connected his "fundraising prowess" with the mafia's arrival in the city and their need to wash money. The mafia are known to have a penchant for crooners and Silvio certainly fits that bill!

It is no surprise that there have been serious riots as a result of Berlusconi surviving yesterday's vote. Young Italians who want a better future are tired of Berlusconi and the absolute filth that surrounds him.

Belasconi is quite possibley the most corrupt politician ever. Until Italy vote him out, they'll never be taken seriously. What kind of PM owns practically all the media. He is Italys version of Rupert Murdoch. Not an ideal pmm not to mention how incredibley sexist the man is.

Are you serious?
f**k having someone like Berlusconi in power, I'd rather have f*cking Cameron and that's saying something.
Regarding the most corrupt politician ever, obviously not, but I'd bet you would not find a more corrupt immoral leader/politician in any other western democracy.
I get what you mean about having characters in politics, but to be honest I'd rather just have someone who selflessly works for the people and says the truth. Is there for all our benefits not just themselves or blindly following their parties lead and do whatever they are told.

An interesting point of which I was not previously aware. Apparently, Nicolas Sarkozy was one of his principal legal advisers in France. Considering recent events surrounding Berlusconi's British lawyer, what does that tell us about Sarkozy?

Most corrupt politician ever..? You obviously don't know much about other world leaders both past and present.

    Sorry too busy laughing at that to compose an answer. I knew I shouldn't have wasted four years studying politics. What do I know?! Better throw my bachelors certificate in the bin.

I probably should have said openly corrupt, if you look at George Bush / Tony Blair / Dick Cheneys business dealings since the Iraq war, it's obvious there is corruption everywhere.
How corrupt do I think Sarkozy is? I don't know, all I know is he's a right-wing french midget with a fit mrs, wouldn't suprise me if he has a corrupt past.

Surely with your degree background you would have known that Italy did vote Berlusconi out by Romano Prodi in 2006 but the government collapsed in Jan' 2008.

I am aware that Berlusconi was voted out. But in this moment, he is still in power isn't he? So until Italy actually rid him once and for all I think Italy won't be taken seriously.

And,because I don't agree with your view point that Berlusconi is a character that Britain should have.....then in your view I know nothing about politics.

You didn't say that about anyone else who disagreed with you. Politics is about opinions. I wonnt agree with you, but I would never say you know nothing about politics on the basis you disagreed with me. Surely to actually know who Berlusconi is means you know something about politics even if it is basic knowledge.

Re characters in politics, I would consider John Prescott, George Galloway and perhaps Lembit Opik as characters not entirely likeable but odd!

And before you point out....I know none of them are MPs at this precise moment.

Midfield general wrote:You are right politics is all about opinions but opinions on correct information rather than statements like 'Belasconi is quite possibley the most corrupt politician ever. Until Italy vote him out, they'll never be taken seriously' is rubbish because (a) there have been far more corrupt politicans in the past and Italy haave voted him out on two occasions!!!

So if your opinions are in anyway based on your studies of politics as you are so proud about then maybe you should question the education in this country.

In your OPINION there have been more corrupt politicians. It is not a fact. And as for your last comment on my education......to be honest its rather prickish of you to try and insult my intellligence whilst making the argument personal when I was just offering my opinion.

And yes I know you'll probably point out that I have stooped to your level and am therefore hypocritical for asking you why you have insulted me then in turn called your comments prickish but I didnt expect that healthy debate would be turned into a personal insult and one good turn deserves another etc.

Would have been interested in what you thought about my suggestions for characters in British Politics but you seem more interested in having an argument.

Yes becauseusing bad language to describe someones actions is more offensive than practically calling someone and their opinion stupid. I'll leave you be.
