yes they did .................. prior to that it used to be the Canton End of the Enclosure as it was called back then ........... 1st team to stand in the Grange End of the Enclosure was Everton in 1977 .
Technically he's correct coz it wasnt called the Lower Grandstand then and no away fan has actualy " stood " in the lower Grandstand !
Thu Nov 25, 2010 7:58 am
Yes they Def did, I Rem A Few thousand Bolton fans in there about 78/79 in a night game, They were top, we were near the bottom of old division 2, they needed a draw and we beat them 1 nil, 5 mins from the end, they were Silenced, Ninian Park with about 12,000 in there went mental, Atmosphere SUPERB
Palace Fans, took a Serious hiding in there one game, Palace and Cardiff games use to be Big.

both enclosures ............... Bristol Rovs once had the Canton Stand ............ Man U had all the Bob Bank , Everton had half the Bob Bank then once the old Grange End was knocked down the away fans had the new Grange End plus also away fans had the Grandstand blocks by the Grange End ! Unofficially Chelsea and Weds have been all over the Grandstand for big games !
Thu Nov 25, 2010 2:29 pm
Can remember Palace having the enclosure on the Canton side in 78 & it kicking off big time in there.Apart from Spurs who were all in the enlosure (grange side) & Man U who had all the Bob Bank can't remember many congregated pre 1977, just an eerie silence when the opposition scored followed by " You gonna get yor fookin eads kicked in". Whatever happened to good old fashion songs with lyrics that had meaning?
Thu Nov 25, 2010 2:37 pm
I remember Liege getting the blocks in the grandstand nearest the canton stand when they visited. It appeared that the police were worried about City giving them a hiding following what I can only describe in rugby parlance as our fans being "boisterousness" and in "high spirits" when we visited thier place shortly before.

True, late 70's before the old Grange end was pulled down. I remember it full in 77 of Chelsea & Wolves, plus Spurs in fa cup. Also big pulls were Sunderland, Bolton & as mentioned CP. The rumour going around at that game was there was Millwall fans in with them.

Thats right Annis, but that was when the away fans were given the whole of the "new" Grange end, after it was opened, [remember Sam put a roof on it]. Thats where the Swansea fans were when we drew them 3-3 on the 27 Dec, 1980 [att 21198]. The Sunderland game in question was six months earlier on the 3rd May 1980 [att 19834], & the Sheffield Wed game was a few years later, on 12, May 1984 [att 14176]. Im sure the capacity at NP was a lot more in the early 80's than the capacity was when NP ended.

I have always suspected that, even some of the last games at NP. I [we] always suspected it was some kind of tax fiddle or something. Not only that, but i remember the Sunderland fans being up in arms in 1980 when they arrived at NP [about 10.000] the addmission prices for away fans had been increased overnight. Im sure Mr Clemmo would remember that!

That Palace game a city fan scaled the fence, ran to the enclosure, got on the team dugout and dived head first into the palace fans. The police then moved them to the Canton stand for their own safety.

I was in the Grange End that day (I must have got lost or gone in there by mistake officer

) - well up until they scored anyway. Seems there were a few other Cardiff fans who were lost as well because as we were discussing the merits of their goal and parentage, some of the jacks took offence and a bit of a kerfuffle ensued. Was being led around the pitch, looked up at the grandstand and the only face I could make out was that of my old man shaking his head
Cautioned - and let back into the Bob Bank

. How times have changed eh
