History of Cardiff City, Help needed.

Sun Nov 14, 2010 1:46 pm

For an a-level I have to do an individual investigation and the title for my investigation is “What factors have made English football clubs more successful than their welsh counterparts”. What I am looking for is if anyone can give me a detailed account, close enough to fact as possible, to the history of our club and the turning points that made us have success or a negative effect on the club. I know the obvious factor is money and the popularity of rugby but apart from that I need to look into our history with a bit more detail.

I am also going to post a similar question on a Manchester united or Liverpool forum, hopefully find some genuine fans with answers.

If anyone is willing to contribute, as close to the truth as possible  , or know of anyone who would be good to contact please could you PM me or just post in on here.

Cheers :ayatollah:

You really need to read about the social origins of football clubs. Eg Liverpool, man utd were born from manufacturing communities, while Everton was a religious response to Liverpool.

As for Cardiff like a lot of others, it routes are from a winter sport to keep the summer club fit (eg cricket clubs). Cardiff’s greatest moments are are in line with the increase of wealth from coal and iron foundries.

A decline wealth has an effect on the community and hence the football clubs, plenty of evidence about for that.

Football became second class in Wales due to welsh teachers and their experience in English grammar schools. The historical aim was to beat the English establishment at the heart of their own sport ie the public school fields.

Ironically football ruled the grammar and public school fields. But because the Football league refused to stop their season at the outbreak of WW1 (the London grounds were required for hospital fields) , a class hatred of the working class game developed.

One must remember the working class were late to volunteer for the great war, but the public/grammer school were up for it on day one – stiff upper lip, king and county etc.

I strongly recommend

Good luck with this mate,

im currently doing the advanced part of welsh bac and i have to do an individual investigation with around 5000-6000 words, hoping to do it on Cardiffs finances.

Also do questionnaires and explain what you see in your results trends etc, that will help you to get nearer to your word count

If you need anyhelp just PM me mate had to have my sent off for examination but luckily i got a pass in it.

one more thing mate i wouldnt do a club like liverpool or manchester it would be more realistic if it was a team which is in the same sort of situation as us with the same sort of fan base as it makes it easier to relate too.

The sale of Toshak to Liverpool was pivotal for both clubs.

Cardiff were top of the league with tosh banging them in for fun promotion a cert when they sold him in March to Liverpool who were a bit shite at the time.
(similair to Bothroyd now)?

Anyway Tosh formed with keegan and we both no the clubs fortunes since then.

also any invesors were put off because the concil owned and owuld not sell ninian park....wankers

In My Time the downfall of city from the 1970's was 2 things.

1-Fighting on the terraces at all Grounds especially Cardiff City put a Lot of Normal fans off inc some of my family members ! We were in the press every week locally for aggro so we attracted more Loonies and way less families etc. In the mid late 70's It was really bad and carried on till 1983ish. then no one was going !! especially when we went in div 4! apart from the lads

2-The welsh Rugby team started to do well

So Combine the 2 things and many people would not go near Football locally or Nationally and Rugby got the upper hand in the area.
