On a personnal level what an achievement for Jay Bothroyd to be named in the England preliminary squad and hopefully he will be called into the final squad over the weekend, congratulations Jay.
But for us as a club is it such a good thing ? Of course we want our players called up for International recognition but at a time when Jay is in discussions over a new contract does this help the club or does it give them a headache ?
If Jay makes it to the final squad there will definately be suitors for his signature come January and couple that with the low wage that he is currently on I would imagine it makes Jay Bothroyd a target for every club in the Premier League from the bottom up.

I believe we need to start planning for life without Jay.
I think the best we can hope for is that come January we are still in or near the top two and that he will stay to hopefully get us promoted.
If we don't get promoted he'll be gone. If we do get promoted he may still go particularly if he gets this international recognition and more established Premiership clubs (eg Villa, Everton ) come in for him I think he'll go.
Our only chance of keeping him is to get promoted and even then I would say that chance is still only a slim one.
I hope he stays until the end of the season because I am really concerned that if he goes in January our promotion hopes will be dealt a mortal blow.

DJ will have to convince VT that we have to keep Bothroyd for us to realise the dream of promotion because the one thing that VT will not do is watch money disappear down the drain.

Carl, Great for Jay he Deserves it, Feeney always told me he was a class act just a bit lazy
No its Not good for Cardiff City in my Opinion, I cant see us keeping him, I really hope I am wrong. This will bring a clutch of Premiership sides all wanting him.

I disagree Annis. The only way he is going to stay with us is if we go up this year. I don't think DJ will let him go in Jan. If we don't get up then good luck to him as he needs to be playing premier football at this stage of his career.
On the other hand what it does do is show other players that you are able to get international recognition playing for us. It will make attracting other talent easier to be able to hold him up as an example.

As i've said, if he gets a cap and doesnt fail, we have little to no chance of keeping him
Fri Nov 12, 2010 6:47 pm
If Jay stays, it will purely be down to loyalty because there is no way we can compete with the sort of money the big boys could offer him. At least not yet.
Realistically, the best we can hope is to keep him until the end of the season - when of course we will get nothing for him. If he goes in the January window, I think we can say goodbye to automatic promotion. Just look at our performances and results in the games he's missed. Our one hope of hanging on to him is to keep him sweet in January, get to the promised land - and then offer him the sort of deal in the Premiership that will make it as attractive a proposition for him to remain a Bluebird as to move to Aston Villa, Everton or anywhere else.
After all, he keeps saying he loves everything about Cardiff - and signing a new deal would prove he means it. You might be about to become the pride of England, Jay, but your adopted country needs you too!

if he did go then it would be sad but he 28 and wants one last big contract.
but flip side of that i dont think he will be as effective at another club\. we play 2 him and i dun tink another team would.
i think we just have to sit back and wait be sad if he did go but maybe jones has to think outside the box if you no what i mean.

Jay you deserve a pop at the premiership, whichever that club may be, but just to be sure:
QUESTION: Who has made you show your TRUE ability?
QUESTION: Who has got you playing the most consistent football you ever have over the last 2 years?
QUESTION: Who do you credit for the rise in your fortunes, apart from yourself?
QUESTION: Has your agent made you a player with a higher value?
QUESTION: Does your agent value himself above YOU?
Whatever you decide to do Jay, I wish you total success. You have been a GodSend to us and we DO appreciate all you have done and given.
For myself I pray that you stay, but if you don't I will never hold it against you. It's your life, your decision & you must do what feels good for you and your lovely family.
Goodluck whatever you decide,
Jim

"i dun tink" - thats just lazy

The club should stop taking the piss out of him offering him a lot less than one of our worst players. He might just sign then.
Fri Nov 12, 2010 7:18 pm
Good Luck Jay
Think he will be going in Jan as well
Fri Nov 12, 2010 8:12 pm
im pleased for jay personally but no its not good news for ccfc. its going to be a sad day when jay leaves us.
Fri Nov 12, 2010 8:13 pm
The funny side to the story is that we will definitely be weaker without Jay but how many were not exactly excited by his signing.
Fri Nov 12, 2010 8:49 pm
great news for jay congratulations it's well deserved, bad news for us i can't see any way we will hold on to him now we'll do well to keep him until the end of the season, if we lose him in january it will be the same as when toshack left all over again, only this time we won't just miss out on promotion we won't even finish in the top 6
Fri Nov 12, 2010 9:42 pm
Well done Jay but na not good news for us.
Who was the last City player to play for England?
Fri Nov 12, 2010 9:49 pm
I dont see the panic actually.
If he stays, we will definitely go up. We will lose 6-7m at the end of the
season, but who gives a f**k, he'll have earned his big signing on bonus
elsewhere.
if he goes in January, it will be for a minimum of 6m... if he plays for
England, who knows, we could get 7-8m ish?
We have Bellamy, Chopra, Burke, Whittingham... We would get a very
good replacement for Jay spending just half that. Plus a strong Centre-half!!
I'd hate to see him go, but if we got a decent replacement AND a couple of
good players on top of it for the money then hey-ho... we'll be just fine!!!
If he does stay, of his own accord. Then f**k me he will be firing on all
cylinders in the run in.... every goal will put a 1/4 million on his price and he
knows it!!

Carl you are spot on there.
I can rememberbeing distinctly underwhelmed when we signed him and if I remember his first few games did little to alter my opinion of him.
Since then however he has been a revelation to such an extent that he has become the fulcrum of our team and as has been shown time and time again the one player who is absolutely vital to this current team.
Fri Nov 12, 2010 10:21 pm
I beleive if we are top of the league by the time Jan comes the club will be able to reject offers for him and he will be content to stay. If he can get into the england squad playing for us then why move for the sake of potentially only 3 months of premier football (assuming we can go up this yr).
jay to stay.
Sat Nov 13, 2010 12:10 am
england or no england. jay or no jay. i'll still hate um..... (sorry billy)
Sat Nov 13, 2010 1:27 am
I think a lot of things need to be considered....If he makes the squad and gets playing time is what makes his worth....if he goes on and makes an arse of himself he wont be looked on well and the opposite if he does well.
In my opinion if he leaves his England career will go backwards, this team is built around him even if he isnt playing well, a move away and he can easily find him on the bench again and not soon after moving clubs.
Sat Nov 13, 2010 2:16 am
no. said that as soon as dave came out with it. just attracts unwanted attention
Sat Nov 13, 2010 7:48 am
Jay being in the England preliminary squad points to the fact he is considered in the top 10 England cenre forwards, so how we could find an adequate replacement for him is something I find worrying. We need to keep him till the end of the season to give ourselves every chance of going up, to lose him in Jan would be a big blow for the club. The fact we've never brought in an adequate cover for him will surely come back to bite us in the arse. He is our most valueable player, his contributions this season are one of the main reasons we're sitting pretty in 2nd spot, I thought the club would have learned a hard lesson with the Ledley transfer but it seems maybe not. "COME ON CITY OFFER HIM A REALISTIC SALARY, ONE CONSUMATE WITH HIS GREAT ABILITY".

I can say absolutely that as a City fan (and Welshman) there is no way on EARTH I'd want him to be picked!!!
I cant think of a more unlikable sporting side on the planet than the English national side.
Just about all my English mates up here have no time for them at all.
In fact I'll go as far to say that IF he is picked and our manager is in any way pleased then it's bang out of order after what happened with Wales and Bellamy.
He plays for a Welsh club (us). We need to keep him and f**k the English national side...they get enough from other clubs.
No way should we be wanting our players to go off, get other clubs sniffing or (worse) get himself injured in some pointless friendly.
And as for him going in Jan...my Old man muttered about the ghost of Toshack's past looming...
Last time City looked good for promotion the Scouse came in and signed Tosh.
To repeat that again...and off load our best player this season would be utter madness and could cost 90 million.
EVERYTHING should be done in persuading him to say...EVERYTHING.
Including banning any of agent Capello's scouts from CCS....
