Cardiff tried to get him but he was always going to Southampton. A lot of other club's tried to sign him as well including some big name Premier club's BUT and I will say this again - He was always going to Southampton.

So no Cardiff didn't miss out on him. He didn't want to go to Cardiff, he wanted to go to Southampton. I don't know what they are like now but at the time Southampton's Academy was one of the most respected in the UK.
Actually thinking about it I don't think Cardiff had their Academy status when Bale joined the Southampton Academy. There's no way a player of that caliber would go to a Football of Excellence.
