A forum for all things Cardiff City

I was very critical of the club in the summer for not strengthening further and leaving us short of cover in certain positions.
However, I now feel there’s a much bigger priority the club needs to focus on.
Robertson, Fish, J. Colwill and Lawlor are all heading into the final 18 months of their contracts. Their stock is incredibly high at the moment, and I genuinely think we’re running a huge risk of losing them to top-end Championship clubs, never mind Premier League sides.
If there’s a trade-off because of financial fair play between strengthening in January or offering these players improved deals, I’d prioritise the new contracts.
Our wage bill should be substantially lower next summer, which, as we all know, is generally the best time to do your transfer business anyway.
Despite all the criticism I threw at the club in the summer, I’d actually be happy to see us sign nobody in January if it meant securing all four players on improved, longer-term deals.
What does everyone think?
I appreciate it could mean missing out on a genuine play-off push this season, but these players are absolutely fundamental to our future. Replacing them with players of similar quality would cost ridiculous money, and I’d hate to see us lose them just as we’re starting to build something really promising.

I highly doubt we'll be looking at significantly improving the squad in January. That has to wait until the summer I think, that's when the big earners are out of contract and will leave - it will free up a lot of money. Maybe a loan or two, but permanent signings in January often come with a premium price.
As for contracts, we've been pretty on top of it since BBM came in so I presume discussions are taking place.
Lawlor signed his just after last summer I think, Salech signed a new one in January and Rubin in March. BBM himself extended his contract in the summer. So you'd think there will be news on these contracts soon.
I don't think these players will but if they ask for too much money then we shouldn't just give it to them. That is how we got into a tough financial position in regards to contracts.

I think January will be focused on getting maybe two inas we obviously missed out in the summer. As Ned said the summer is when we'll see any real movement as Turnbull, Robinson and Chambers deals will expire and they are all on great wages

Id go for extended contracts but I think 1 or 2 loans could be possible even if we extend all the above contracts
I think when the high earners like robbo and chambers leave in the summer we can look for permanent additions to the squad

We need to tie players down - Get a striker in Jan and a few others as a few here now will be away in that tournament .

I am not sure how accurate the weekly salary is but this site lists when contracts are due:
