This is what Wetherspoons say, for what it's worth:

1. It is not Wetherspoons policy to ban people wearing poppies.

2. There were certain security procedures in place on this day because of nearby demonstrations taking place. Some people were refused entry for these reasons. Some of these people were wearing poppies.

3. The pub closed at 5pm to all customers on advice from police.

All I can say is that I've been to Wetherspoons over the years and a lot of them sell poppies in there, so I highly doubt the company have a blanket ban on them.

Annis, I'm just saying what they have said. There's obviously two sides to the story and I haven't looked into this incident enough to know the truth. Just saying what the other side said and not taking sides.

In the clip, the veteran, who is filming, is told by staff that the poppy is 'political' and he would not be served while wearing it. The staff member explains to the veteran that it is a blanket rule which covers anything that could be perceived as political.

Your right Ned, there always is.

The footage was damming though by the Witherspoons staff.

He then explains how the man can enter the boozer if they take off their poppies and put them in their pockets. "But don't put it on inside," he continues. "Because you'll be asked to leave and they won't serve you."

Obviously an overzealous employee/manager who thinks he is the one that makes company policy after reading something and taking it way out of context. Saw it many times when I was working in retail.

Even spoons aren't stupid enough to alienate 80% or more of their clientele.

Sadly some people are just too stupid to be allowed out frankly, let alone run a pub

What do we think of Tower Hamlets council then, scheduling an Islamaphobia conference to start at 11am on the 11th November. They're now saying it was a mistake, it should of said the 10th. Not sure I believe them.

All click bait and only share a small side of the story.

All social media is full of it, and it’s just used to create hate and divide and people are brain washed by most of it

There are no circumstances where wearing a poppy is "political" or inappropriate. I've seen the excuse doesn't cut it sorry

Ironic, at a time our treacherous politicians are talking about conscription and preparing for war.

It looks like a confused issue on the day, but I will be attending a number of Remembrance parades and services this coming November regardless

I will be wearing my Poppy with pride, and in honour of those, including friends and family members, who gave their all for our tomorrow

As an aside, I am very concerned at the Senedd’s view on how the ‘diversity’ word is being used as a tool to dampen down traditional practices in Wales. Eventually, the poppy will be (more) targeted, as it may ‘offend’ a small number of people

It is vitally important that we will remember them! :notworthy:

Absolutely agree poppies are worn in respect for the people that fought for our freedom, it's not a political statement.
