Penalties

Always wondered last season how we had so much possession and so many touches in the opposition box and yet had so few penalties.

In a higher division we've now had three in the last three games and should have had one against Boro. Unfortunately we've missed two out of three.

Why can't professional footballers put a penalty kick in the top corner? Virtually all penalty kicks go along the ground and if like Salech and Willock you don't get the ball right in the bottom corner, any six foot plus keeper who dives the right way is going to save it.

Take Salech's penalty yesterday - if he'd lifted that four or five foot off the ground the keeper's not getting it.

If you can put it towards the top corners no keeper in the world is getting near it.

Don't understand this obsession with the bottom corners.

To be honest, when I was young they always said to kick it low and hard.

Rarely see players kick it high because obviously there's a big risk of it hitting the bar or going over.

Wasn't a great penalty by Salech but to be fair it was a good save by the goalkeeper.

Dont know the reasons why but we were the second top scorers in the 4 divisions last year but think we only had one penalty all season. Even that was only given in the last couple of minutes when we were already 1-0 up and Salech was brought down when all he had to do was tap it in. Yet we have had 3 in 11 last days.

I would argue that it's much riskier to kick it low and hard because it gives the keeper the very best chance of saving the penalty.

Stick it in the top corner and no goalkeeper in the world is reaching it even if he guesses the right way.

If I were a professional who takes penalties I would be practising that in training every day.

I wouldn't know where to find the statistics but I bet far more penalties are missed going low than going high.

Only going by what I was told when I used to play football (not at a very good standard I'll add) and they suggested it's easier for the keeper to save a high penalty than get down for a low one.

Suppose different people will suggest different ways though.

I always preferred the Julian dicks type penalty because even if the keeper got a hand to it the hand would end up in the back of the net with the ball

But when I was 14 I played youth football for Southampton and now and again some of the first team would come over and give pointers and I remember we were practicing pens one night as we had a cup game against reading on the following sunday and Matt le tisser came over and said if you hit the side of the next its impossible for a goal keeper to reach it

The following sunday the game went to pens and I was so focused on hitting the side net I put it wide :), haunted me for years lmao
