Aberfan - 60 years

Tue Oct 20, 2026 11:09 pm

Today, 21st October, is 60 years since the Aberfan disaster.

A dreadful part of history.

Really good piece on the BBC, where they spoke to those who survived in different ways.

RIP to those poor souls, devastating to this day

I have a very good friend and colleague, who lost his sister on that day and my late father (not a miner) was one of the rescuers alongside so many others

My heart goes out to all those who perished on that fateful day, and to those left behind to bear the pain and suffering that followed

May all those lost souls Rest in Peace!

My father was a miner and he was one if the many miners who helped try to rescue people from this dreadful event. I hope we have some commemoration on Saturday - whether it be a minutes silence or players wearing black armbands.
I can still remember our school headmaster coming into our class on the day asking if anybody had brothers or sisters who attended Pant Glas school.

Sixty years ago today on October 21st 1966, the small South Wales coal mining village of Aberfan in the Merthyr Vale was devastated.

An avalanche of coal waste crashed into Pant Glas Junior School and nearby houses on that fateful day, killing 144 people – 116 of them children.

The Cardiff City squad and management were joined by Ken Choo and Club executives in Aberfan yesterday as we paid our respects to the Aberfan community.

Ahead of Saturday’s kick-off with Birmingham City, a minute’s silence will be held in memory of those who lost their lives. Players of Cardiff City Football Club and Birmingham City Football Club will wear black armbands as a mark of respect.

Our game will be dedicated to a generation lost – and the courage and determination of the Aberfan survivors and their families.

Today, and always, we remember Aberfan.

To those we love and miss so very much | I'r rhai a garwn ac y galarwn o'u colli.

Rip to all those kids and adults.

A sad day for all and the village itself, a horrendous disaster close to me personally and living next to all. Very busy here today it is with people and traffic at times.

I went up the Memorial garden and cemetery yesterday with the club, it was very emotional. My grand children live there and attended the new school, the youngest is reciting a poem she wrote aged just 10 , to the King today. we are very pround. The children are taught in school about the tragedy and the 144 Will never be forgotten.
The village goes through this every day, especially the families who were affected, but October 21st is always the most difficult day and my heart goes out to them all, its unimaginable pain losing a child, they lost a generation. May they rest in peace.

My youngest son was born 20 years ago today and as a family we visited the cemetery and memorial garden a few years back. It was the 40th anniversary when he was born, but I always reflect on how lucky we were to have him when so many families lost their children at that time...really sad and avoidable.

Yeah i was 7 years old, the same age as many of the children who lost their lives that day and living just over the valley in Trehafod (Rhondda). I remember all the men of our village rushing over there to give what help they could and not coming back for days, it's a memory that i'll take to my grave. GOD BLESS ALL THEM WEE ANGELS....RIP.

Very sad day , I saw the devastation of a family who never recovered after losing 2 boys in the disaster . They then adopted 2 girls and brought them up as their own but the parents were recluses and the dad had a mental breakdown . I got engaged to one of the girls many years ago and I was close to the family . Absolutely devastating. RIP

Never forgotten indeed.

Always brought a tear to my eyes whenever I would see the memorial while driving past.
