i think this has now become obvious. We're now coming in to november and there is no sign of him signing a new contract and now liverpool and fulham are buzzing around him. If anyone genuinely thinks jay will turn down liverpool cos he sees himself as a cardiff lad etc etc, is in my opinion of their rocker! Jay is 28 and will get a massive signing on fee when he moves from us. The thing that bothers me about this is that once again we're gonna lose out cos of one peter risdale!
Having said that, i think jay and burke should have been the first players the new board tied up with new contracts when they came in as these are the players with the biggest market value. What surprises me most about this is that dave jones was the man who started this jay bothroyd for england stuff, knowing that he could sign a pre-contract with someone else in january! on the one hand it was great man mangement cos it's clearly boosted jay and he is playing out of this world at the moment, but as i've stated it has also brought jay into the media spotlight and attracted the vultures. This is by far the best cardiff team i have seen in the 22 years i've followed them, but the frightening thing is that if u include burke and jay (cos we can command no fee for them) 7 of our players are not ours at the end of the season!!!

I think Ledley should of given us one more season, I still believe though that Jay is Class in this Division, but Not in the Premiership, just My Opinion

If Jay left, the Fans would soon make him public enemy NO 1

if he gets booked against Norwich and misses the Jacks game then he will defo be that ..... sooner !

i do agree that he'll regret it once he's gone. For the first time he's settled and happy but money talks and he's not gonna turn down a big signing on fee, and if liverpool really do come calling he's gone. I do think he'd be stupid to go fulham, wigan etc when we're potentially much bigger than them. I truly hope i'm wrong but i just cant see him staying now he's left it so late

How long before people stop blaming Ridsdale for everything?
OK so Jay hasn't signed, but he was never going to sign last season unbtil he knew if he was going to be a Prem player or not,and now he sees the chance of a better contract with us or someone else if he hangs on a bit. Nothing to do with PR at all.
Thu Oct 28, 2010 8:17 am
i mentioned ridsdale but i also mentioned the new administration. The fact is mate jay probably would have signed early last year as he was still in a position where nobody else would touch him, but since then his profile has grown and grown up to tje point where people are calling for him to be in the england squad so yes i do think the riddler should take are of responsibility and he didnt only leave jay in the last year of his contract but darcy, kev, whitts, burke, mcphail as well. U don't see other clubs getting into that position all the time like we do

How many Championship players always flop for England tho ( when they eventually get chosen ) ? I can only remember in my lifetime Nugent at PNE and Steve Bull at Wolves ever doing it from what was / is the " old 2nd Division " !
IMO Bothroyd is well down the pecking order at the mo

It may have escaped your notice but last year we didnbt have a pot to piss in, exactly what money were we supposed to use to entice players to sign new contracts?

Only ONE Answer to that

Jay hasn't signed because he wants Premiership football and he believes he's good enough to play there. I think if Liverpool came in for him he would be gone although i honestly couldn't see him get much game time there. The key here is Vincent Tan if he can prove to jay that we will invest in January and almost guarantee him Premiership football next season i think he would sign a new contract
Maybe we could offer him a contract with a get out clause if we fail to get promoted letting him go for a fee of 3m (Which he is definitely currently worth IMO)

Would Joe get in our team tho ? I cant. Maybe as a left back but certainly not in midfield

Thsi is the #1 question we need Carl and Annis Jr to try to get some insight on. What the hell is going on? Is he holding back or is the club?

Bit of a sensational topic title don't you think? We're nowhere near that stage yet. He can't sign for another team in England until next July if he was to leave (you can only sign a pre contract in Jan with a foreign club).
Jones mentioned on the Cardiff City phone in yesterday that he'd opened talks with Jay about a new contract yesterday.
Personally, I think Jay would be silly to sign with us yet. He's 28 and is in the form of his life, he'll want one last crack at the premiership. It's not guaranteed that we'll be promoted yet, we're only a quarter of the way through the season.
I think he'll keep his options open until the new year and see how we're doing then. I can see him signing a new contract with us, but not this side of Christmas and we'd have to be odds on to gain promotion.

I wouldn't mind Joe in our squad he could do a job in a few positions, would certainly prefer him to Gavin Rae. His best position for us was as a wide player but he wouldn't dislodge Bellamy or Whittingham from the left wing imo.

I think your wrong there mate. Bothroyd would be free to sign a pre contract agreement with any english league club from January and although the contract would not be binding it is a statement of intent and there would be no going back from it. By that I mean if he signed a pre contract agreement with any other club then any contract offered by Cardiff City would be quickly withdrawn and he would be off. So I would say it is vital he signs a contract before Christmas or we can kiss his ass goodbye.

That part doesn't make sense, of course you can back down from it if is not binding.
I'd love Bothroyd to sign a new contract before Christmas, but can't see him doing it. Would you if you were in his shoes?
This might well be his last contract as he'll be 29 by the time next season kicks off. I'm guessing he's on around 8k per week going by our wage structure (just for arguments sake) and the fact he came to us under a bit of a cloud from Wolves.
He could quite easily be looking at trebling his wages and getting a hefty signing on fee if he waits and goes to a prem club next season. We might well be able to match that if we're in the premiership, we won't if we're still in the Championship.
At the end of the day he doesn't owe us anything, Dave Jones has got his career back on track and in return he has put in some quality performances for us over the past 3 years. I hope he doesn't get the same kind of stick Ledley got if he does decide to see his contract out, we need him focused on getting us promotion.
Thu Oct 28, 2010 2:19 pm
Yes he can back down from it if it is not binding, but do you think Dave Jones, Vincent Tan, TG and the fans would be happy if he signed a pre contract agreement with another club - I dont and if it were me I would withdraw any contract offer made to him by CCFC immediately. Now if I were in his shoes I am not sure what I would do because I have not seen the contract that he has been offered. All I am saying is that if he does not sign the contract offered to him by Christmas then in all likelihood he will leave, possibly in January or more likely next summer. Thats very sad in my eyes because he has been a great servant to the club but the pull of a big club such as Liverpool and a big wage packet may be just too much for him to turn down. His agent may already have been sounded out by clubs such as Liverpool in which case this may be the reason for him not signing the contract on the table from CCFC. He has a lot of hard thinking to do but for the sake of our club I hope he does not take too much time making up his mind.

It's probably not Jones Ridsdales or anyone else's fault, Jay is a sensible bloke and is simply running down his contract to secure the best possible deal here or away for his future. I would do exactly the same in his position and see what happens in the summer.
This is going to happen more and more in the future get used to it, in another post they mention Anton Ferdinand and David Wheater doing exactly the same................

Why would Jay leave us for a club in the relegation zone?
Thu Oct 28, 2010 7:01 pm
Jay will leave if we don't go up. If one of the top 7 prem teams come in for him, then good luck to him. I can't see that happening somehow.
we know from what happened with joe that the teams in the lower half of the premiership (eg Stoke) won't be offering much more than we can. I think Joe would have stayed if we had gone up this year.
Liverpool - possibly, but unlikely. Would he want to play second fiddle to Tores? Also, if Liverpool do sell Torres then they will be able to afford someone much more high profile with the money they get for him.
mind you, if Celtic were willing to offer Jay £25,000 a week........ (and Jay is actually worth a lot more than joe was IMHO)

in a way i think jay is in the same mode as chopra where he is a quality championship player but an average premiership one.
a comparison i made this week was between jay and hernandez .
against leeds bellamy crossed a quality ball and jay hit it first time straight at a defender and it got deflected away for a corner.
hernandez against wolves had the prescence to drag the ball to the left before finishing and there lies the difference with speed of thought and awareness.
i think jones has got him playing at his peak and this is as good as it gets for him.
having said that i can assure you the club are currently in negotiations with jay

Interesting debate on JB.
Personally I do think on current form from what I have seen, which is more limited than the game time you on here have seen obviously, but I would say that JB has the technique to play Premiership football but the only previous question was his desire, clearly David Jones has got the best out of the player and it would be dependent on what Manager he played under in the Premeirship on how he would perform.
Good win at Leeds by the way!
