BBM: “ I DO NOT THINK WE WILL BE APPEALING “

Sun Oct 18, 2026 6:26 am

Cardiff City defender Gabriel Osho did not deserve his red card at Middlesbrough, according to Bluebirds boss Brian Barry-Murphy.

But Cardiff's head coach hinted he would not appeal the decision that saw the visitors finish their 2-2 draw at the Riverside with ten men.

Osho was given his marching orders for an 83rd minute challenge on Boro goalscorer Will Lankshear after the pair had a running battle during the latter stages of the fixture that saw Cardiff take a two-goal first-half lead before the hosts' comeback.
Barry-Murphy claimed he had not reviewed the footage, but said: "Osho was in the position that we wanted him to be, he had to be aggressive and go for the ball.

"I didn't think it was a red card but the referee made his decision and I have to move on quickly and try and find a solution to help the players."

Cardiff host Birmingham City next Saturday, Chris Davies' Blues having dropped just two points in their last five games with Saturday's 3-0 win over QPR followed a 4-0 win over Preston.

Osho faces an automatic ban, with Dylan Lawlor and Callum Chambers already out injured and Will Fish only making substitute appearances after his return from injury.

Asked if Cardiff will appeal Osho's red, Barry-Murphy said: "I'm not sure. History suggests that our appeals haven't been very successful in my time here. We'll see what happens after we review the footage."

I think it was harsh.

But don't see much point in appealing, probably not one that would get overturned.

Ned i used an example of ncastle game as to why should been yellow but in reality they will say it was an error by var and should been red so not sure that rationale will stand up! The tackle was stupid and it was a yellow but as ref gave red after the intervention of lino not sure got grounds to appeal will depend on report but not sure theres any point as it could been red in 1st instance and couldn't complain.

What I don't understand is why he stopped the game. Both the linesman and the referee saw the foul and the ref decided to play the advantage which they still had. He could have continued and then sent Osho off if he felt it warranted it. So why stop it? My feeling is that the 4th official communicated to him that he thought it was a red. If so I am pretty sure this is not within his powers as he can only intervene if the referee or linesman didn't see it, which they clearly did and had a good view of it. If we do appeal we need to be asking this question.

Not sure of 4th officials role regarding game assume hes there to help out if pitch officials miss something! But your right ref must have saw it and let play go with view to a booking after move finished ( not unusual) but lino was flagging furiously so presumably ref decided to stop play.... .not sure can win appeal as foul could have been yellow or red in its own right.

Definitely bring up the Botman challenge for Newcastle last night too. Villa haven't had an apology so assume the authorities think yellow was the right call. If so, Osho's shouldn't be a red.

Referee said to Botman "you got a touch on the ball but I think it's reckless". Osho didn't get the ball but I think it was reckless at best, not dangerous. Botman's challenge was far more dangerous.

I have looked at the rules and the 4th officials role is mainly to deal with the administration of the game.i.e substitutions, time, plus the conduct in the technical area. He can only intervene regarding the field of play if he sees some major issue that the ref or linesman has missed because they were looking the other way or couldnt see ite.g a punch, headbutt etc. He is not there to act in the same way VAR does. The ref and linesman saw it, the linesman flagged, ref played advantage and the linesman then dropped his flag and followed the ball. For some unknown reason the ref then decided to stop play. As it was right in front of the 4th official I have a sneaking feeling that he let the ref know he thought it was a red. If this is the reason he was sent off - it may not have been- i think they have broken their own guidance.

Well someone made ref change mind? Tbh seen tackles like that go unpunished in championship so there is hope it will be overturned if we appeal! Like said will depend on what is said and if 4th official involved as you say thats not his job that could change things..

Botman cleanly took the ball first though, then his foot rolled over the ball with his momentum and follow through. I didn't even think it was a foul, as first contact was with the ball. If players get sent off for catching the man on the follow through, there will be no defenders left on the pitch.

Osho's was completely different, as he dived in, went over the ball, completely missed the ball and his first contact was with the man.

Sometimes we have to take off our blinkers, be honest and admit it was a sending off. It will never get overturned.

We're not going to agree but just because he got the ball it doesn't mean it's not a bad challenge, it's not the 80s anymore and things have changed.

I still believe his challenge was far more dangerous than Osho's, no coincidence that pretty much every pundit has said it should have been a red card.

If Pro Ref apologise to Villa tomorrow then that probably takes away the possibility of appeal but if not, a case can be made.

I doubt it'll get overturned but I do think there are arguments for it to be. But if we do appeal, I would expect them to stick with the referee's call.

Yes touched ball but it was the top of ball and considering opponent was in possession his foot was high in 1st place.... playing the ball doesn't absolve player action to get ball .... there are questions over the decision and how it was made? Ref clearly played on despite seeing incident the lino flagged madly but then ran up pitch at that point ref stops game as was said earlier did 4th official get involved? If so he overstepped his role ! Was it a red seen it given yet seen same or worse get yellow so don't think anyone can say definite red but did leave ref to make a decision but question is did he or did others make that decision?

The other thing with the Botman one is that the referee had already blown his whistle for another foul a few seconds before, which sort of makes it worse. Because the player then probably thought it was one he could get away with because the game wasn't going on, that's something they pointed out on Sky.

He cleanly took the ball with the first foul too. A complete disaster by the officials I thought.

The Armstrong booking for Everton v Chelsea was a good clean tackle too.

Any hard but fair challenge of getting the ball first, then catching the man on the follow through seems to be an automatic yellow these days. They may as well ban tackling altogether.

With silly bookings given for fair tackles like that, there is no chance Osho's sending off will be rescinded, as he completely missed the ball.
