SAM: ONE FOR THE AGES
Tue Oct 13, 2026 7:18 pm
After Liverpool v Man City at the weekend, The Daily Mail has ranked the top-10 most 'toxic atmospheres' at football matches.
Chief sports writer Ollie Holt has ranked the matches based on the games he has been at - and Cardiff's famous 2002 FA Cup win over Leeds United came in at No.2
Bluebirds fans remember this game for the famous win and pitch invasion post-match, with Cardiff toppling a Leeds side who were then top of the Premier League.
Holt said: "A throwback game and not in a good way. This felt like a return to the hooliganism of the 1980s as two sets of old-school fans lit into each other.
Alan Smith, the Leeds forward, was sent off, Sam Hammam, the Cardiff owner, wound up a crowd that didn’t need winding up and there was a pitch invasion."

Loved this night! One of the best atmospheres I’ve ever been in!
Sam walking around the pitch, a feral Bluebird support, Leeds supporters acting ‘Billy Big Balls’ but soon realising they were biting off more than they could chew; before we overturned their lead, put them out of the FA Cup, started the ruination of their Premier League dream, and then had to suffer their whinging manager blame everyone/anything bar himself for their defeat against a side who really wanted it!
There was no real ‘trouble’, and the only one I recall defending us was a certain Andy Gray of Sky Sports, which I’ve never forgotten!
Great days, a great atmosphere, a great win, and I’d have them back tomorrow!

Too right there wasn't any real trouble. Just a brilliant but hostile atmosphere, nothing wrong with that
