Cardiff City to appoint ex-Sunderland coach in reunion with Brian Barry-Murphy, they were both together at Rochdale.

EXC: Cardiff City are set to appoint a former Sunderland and Hibernian coach, with Craig Samson reuniting with Brian Barry-Murphy at the club

Cardiff City are set to appoint Craig Samson to their coaching staff as their protracted search for a new goalkeeping coach finally reaches its conclusion.

Samson is poised to join Brian Barry-Murphy's backroom team as the club's new goalkeeper coach, replacing Gavin Ward, who departed at the end of last season.

The appointment will also see Barry-Murphy reunite with Samson, who worked as goalkeeper coach at Rochdale during the Cardiff boss' time in charge of the club.

Samson spent six months at Spotland in the 2019/20 season, working alongside Barry-Murphy and current Cardiff coach Kevin Gibbins.

Samson left professional football in 2022.

Samson has been out of the professional game for over three years, but originally took up a coaching position at Sunderland in November 2018.

He left the club in November 2019 and was then appointed as the first team goalkeeping coach of League One club Rochdale the following month.

He moved to Hibernian during the 2020 close season.

Samson also registered as a player with Hibs, and was listed as a substitute for a League Cup match with Brora Rangers on 7 October.

Hibs announced in February 2022 that Samson had left the club.

After leaving Hibernian, Samson signed a short-term deal with Aberdeen in a player-coaching role due to an injury crisis at the club and at the end of May 2022 Samson was out of the professional game.

And so from now on your not going to see two goal keepers on the bench, and the penny will eventually drop to the many as to the true reason why two keepers have been selected on match days.

Hmmm I think it'll be more to do with having other players back, but I'm sure we'll see later in the season as we are bound to be short later in the year with such a small squad

Not enough goals there for me. Tan won't appreciate that either. ;-)

I wasn’t aware the ‘two keepers on the bench’ reason was out there, so can you enlighten (at least some of) us, as I can’t see how a lack of a keeper coach was a strategy for that occurrence? :?

In the meantime, I welcome Craig Samson to the club :ayatollah:

The implication is that the second keeper was acting as the goalkeeper coach

Thanks!

Still can’t see that being the case, though! How would that work? :?

Goalkeeper drills require 3 participants, its normally the goalkeeper sub keeper and keeper coach who participate , so without a coach you need to name a third keeper in the squad although im fairly sure one of the outfield subs would be able to do the job of putting in crosses and shots from either the left or right side

Trott, Turner and Tyrer would all be on the pitch for the warm up last season with no goalkeepers on the bench.

Yea thats true , maybe different rules in the championship? I honestly dont know but that was the reason given for the 2 keepers on the bench thing

Appreciate you giving it a go, but my next question would fall in with KBK-13’s, where I would ask ‘why were only two on the bench fur the last couple of games (where no keeper coach was employed)?’

It’s an odd one, but I’m inclined to go with the ‘making a point to management’ theory, but I honestly don’t know! :ayatollah:
