Full-backs To The Rescue?

The transfer window was incredibly disappointing, but there’s no point crying over spilt milk. That’s gone now. The criticism is justified, but nothing is going to change in the short term.

As far as I can see, we have two major issues with the lack of recruitment.

One is that we have no real alternative to Salech, and the other is our wide attackers.

I hate to criticise players who give their all, but on current form both Tanner and Willock look like they have no idea where their crosses and shots are going to go.

Whether that’s mental or they’re just not Championship-level players is a matter of opinion, but it remains a huge concern, especially when you look at BBM’s tactics and the fact that most of our chances should be coming from these wide areas.

If you look at a player like Sabo Thomas, he started his career as an attacking full-back, very similar to Ronan Kpakio.

For me, from wide areas, Bagan, Kpakio and Scanlon seem to be our best players when it comes to the final ball and creating chances.

If you remember, at the start of last season Kpakio was leading the way with assists, and that was from full-back.

I really think BBM should at least try Kpakio on the wing, and maybe even both him and Scanlon further forward if Moylan plays inside as a 10.

Loving your posts lately Nickoblue23. I've been thinking exactly the same as you as a way of trying to change things up a little with our wing play. Kpakio and Scanlon are both so fast yet wasted on the bench. Would like to see them both tried further forward (although maybe not at the same time).

Gotta get this first win on the board somehow!

I think do away with wingers too they offer nothing for us

I’d like to see a 5-2-2-1 formation when all we have out cbs fit

Rubin and moylen both at 10 Joel and Robertson cm with Scanlon and NG adding width overlapping I know Ng not as quick as kpakio but offers so much more quality

i'd go 442, we can do all the fluid movement and passing but let do the badics

Probably the greatest ever welsh player began as a full back and got pelters at spurs at the beginning because he couldn't defend but he went on to have a pretty decent career playing further forward

Think Kpakio and Scanlon would make great wing backs. I don't think he will at least not yet anyway. Despite all the moaning we created plenty yesterday just didn't look like scoring

Lots to agree with in the comments, but I really feel we’re missing a trick with Kpakio. He does have some defensive limitations at the moment, but I think that distracts from just how good he can be going forward. He’s only played one game and already got the assist for Ashford’s goal.

I’m not sure BBM really believes in wing-backs, but I agree, and think Scalon and Kpakio are purpose-built for those roles. Bagan would also be a fantastic LCB in a back three.

If we continue to go with the 3 attackers, Hopefully we'll get to see them given a chance in that more attacking wide position at some point, because we definitely need more options than we currently have.
