Barry-Murphy has confirmed Cardiff City are still targeting

Tue Aug 18, 2026 3:59 am

Barry-Murphy has confirmed Cardiff City are still targeting additions across the squad, but insists the club will not rush into the transfer market for the sake of it.

Cardiff City manager Brian Barry-Murphy has insisted the club are still looking to strengthen in “all areas” of the squad as he explained why their transfer business has been slower than expected.

Cardiff have made just one new signing from outside the club this summer, with Jack Moylan arriving from Lincoln City on a four-year deal. Goalkeeper Nathan Trott has also returned on a permanent basis after spending last season on loan, while Liverpool left-back Calum Scanlon has come back to the capital for another temporary spell.

Moylan impressed on his league debut against Wrexham, but Barry-Murphy has made no secret of the fact that he wants further additions before the transfer window closes.

Asked for an update after Monday night's game, the Cardiff boss was typically guarded, but confirmed recruitment remains firmly on the agenda.

“I think it's obvious we're looking to add to the squad,” Barry-Murphy said.

“We are quite stretched at the moment in terms of that position. We're so stretched because the players are all from the same area of the team — Dylan (Lawlor), Will Fish, Callum Chambers.

“That doesn't change our recruitment strategy, but it means that we probably look more stretched than we probably are.”

The defensive situation has been complicated by injuries. Fish is facing a lengthy absence after surgery, while Dylan Lawlor and Chambers are also unavailable, leaving Cardiff short of options at the back.

But Barry-Murphy stressed the club are not simply going to react to those setbacks by rushing into the market.

“I think we need to improve all areas of the team still, so I think that's clear,” he said.

“I'm not sure on Dylan's timescale. It's not straightforward because he's come back and been close and not quite got back onto the pitch, so it's quite difficult to predict on him.

Annis, we need a CB, a winger with pace who can take on defenders, another stiker and a creative midfielder, now how many we get will be down to the dictator. I thought we got out of jail a bit last night, Wrexham should have put the game to bed well before Rubins super strike. For all the possesion we had we hardly tested their keeper, that said we kept plugging away and never gave up, i also think we've got a gem in Moylan, he looks a real player who i think will score a lot of goals for us.

It’s good to hear players are still being sought and it’s disappointing that more haven’t come in to date, but this season I don’t think it’s all down to Vincent Tan? The vibe between owner and coach just feels a little different after last season’s success and their positive summer meeting

A lot of the issue at the moment seems to stem from the residue of the World Cup, where clubs who have players BBM might want (likely on loan) are reluctant to let them go before they are 100% happy they won’t be required in their nominated squads?

I like that he (BBM) is particular in his choices, and with 15 days still to go in the window, I’m as confident as I can be that there will be the right additions to this squad :ayatollah:

Chris think people need to remember we've wasted millions on last minute players who were not good enough... now its more targeted which means less chance of getting everyone bbm wants .... can blame tan but as you say they seem to have good relationship (perhaps tan fancies bbms wife) :laughing6: and bbm appears happy with situation and tans support.. not yo sure maje another cash sighnings but couple of good loans will be ok until han

He's not going to panic buy.

He'll have an idea on what he wants but if the right players aren't available, then I don't think he'll sign someone for the sake of it.

Personally if we are only bringing in one or two I wouldn't go for a CB we've got 4 starters there in theory. We need someone to play 6 I wasn't convinced by Robertson there last night and we need another striker. On a side note hats off to Bagan he did a stellar job covering last night

We need I think much better defensive minded number 6. If that Dutch guy rumour is true a taller one would be ideal as height is lacking a little

That game highlighted exactly why BBM needs backing with transfers. Our defensive spine was completely disrupted by the injuries to Fish, Chambers and Lawlor, forcing Bagan into centre-half alongside Osho, and Osho's defensive positioning was exposed early on. You can't expect fluid football when Scanlon just arrived, Moylan is still building partnerships, and Rubin is only fit enough for a 25-minute cameo. We’ve got a good squad, but injuries cripple us. Signing three or four defensive & midfield additions, and a striker isn't a luxury; it's an absolute necessity if we want proper stability

Apparently our squad numbered 26 Wrexhams was 34.

I don't believe for a second that there aren't literally hundreds of players in this country and abroad who would fit nicely into our squad and improve it considerably.

Why we have been unable to discover any such players or persuade any we have discovered to come to Cardiff (except Moylan) is a concern.

Mr Tans policy of making out he is backing the manager but with lots of budget restrictions .

what davids says is true there is loads of players city can get that are good enough to play for us but remember bbms words ? He's fussy and won't buy for the sake of it and theres your problem? Bbm as he admits he can be to stubborn when comes to players.... as he put himself into a corner wanting certain types of players? Time will tell if he sorts out the conundrum he's created

We have probably the weakest squad in the Championship. It really shouldn't be difficult to identify players who could improve the squad. Heaven knows what's going on down there..

I don't think we have the weakest squad at all, I'm confident we would stay up with the current group.

But it's almost certain we will add several before the close of the window. Then we can decide whether the manager has been backed or not.

BBM did say that things happening slow are more a reflection on him than on the club.

He need backing is what he needs anyone who believes he didnt want 3 or 4 players to improve the squad a month ago is delusional but he only saying what he can to the media. it all boils down to money and the Muppets above to sort it, if and when they do that is :bluescarf:

Agree - As I posted before we have had at least 3 months to plan and target players after the Owner/Manager meeting .
Looks like we will be going down the loan road with under 2 weeks to go and hopefully at least another or 2 signed ...

How many said the same last summer though?

I get that the Championship is different but this manager is not going to sign people for the sake of it.

That's how we ended up with Simic, Etete etc and wasted money.

We all go on about wasted money and can't have it both ways. There is plenty of time left and let's see what the squad actually looks like in September.

Mobty you tell us what the restrictions are? Because I cant comment on what they are Because I simply don't know if there are any? But I did make the point bbm as said he can be a boy fussy when comes to players and that could be hindering him.... identifying players is bbms job and his team not tan so where does tan fit into this area? As I put not getting players is down to bbms ideology something he iludes to... you are avoiding blaming bbm in your response but happy to insinuate its tans fault
Bbm hasn't signed the nessasary players when clearly bbm is the problem he admits that.. tans involvement is down to pure speculation on yours and others dislike of tan not on plain facts! I've answered your request now you tell me what makes you say tan is not backing bbm ? AND DONT SAY PREVIOUS SEASONS? Tan obviously as excellent relationship with bbm as the pictures of them in Malaysia showed.

That's being very disingenuous towards bbm basically saying he's tans puppet ? I dislike tan being here like the rest of fans but blaming him for what appears to be bbms ideology is wrong and any criticism should be directed at bbm and his stubbiness to commit to getting in the number of players he know we need... why would bbm sign contract if he wasn't given the tools to improve the squad to his satisfaction... absolutely nothing as been said or indicated that Tan is not backing bbm.....

We have had at least 3 months to plan and have targets which could have been known before this time .
Go back a few seasons ago when we stayed up and got in around 4 or 5 players in Jan - We did not win a game that month.
But went on a run after and stayed up - It's all about players getting to know each other and finding a system .
The above is a fact look it up - It's called history and every manager we have had has wasted money in their time .
That includes Malkey ( who got us there ) and Warnock .

If people Walk in to your boss office or whatever this week and tell him what they really think. Then phone the main shareholders up and tell them what they really think also. See what happens :bluescarf:
