Uefa to boycott World Cup if Fifa plans approved

Thu Jul 30, 2026 3:23 pm

BBC reporting:

Uefa's 55 member associations have voted to boycott the World Cup if Fifa proceeds with its plan to sell stakes in its competitions to private investors.

The decision was made at an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the proposals announced by Fifa - world football's governing body - on Tuesday.

Uefa, which governs European football, had made its opposition clear by releasing two damning statements about the plans - and that strength of feeling has now been reaffirmed.

The boycott would cover all Fifa competitions, including the men's and women's World Cups and Club World Cup and be triggered if Fifa president Gianni Infantino's proposals are voted through by member associations.

The first time this stance will be tested is October, when the Women's World Cup play-offs are due to be held. :bluebird:

So the corrupt scum running UEFA are going to boycott the World Cup , ran by the even more corrupt scum of FIFA. I thought we’d reached the nadir with Blatter, then that rat Infantino appeared.

That's his proposal dead. You've got a completely worthless competition without Europe. Who's going to invest in that

You would think & hope so but I wouldn't be so sure. He might try it without the Europeans and anyone else who joins them but it's going to take more than just Europe because they're not as important as they have been in the past.

I think it ends the FIFA proposal.

You'd have a situation where the World Cup holders wouldn't be competing in the World Cup, neither would three of the four semi finalists or two of the hosts for the next tournament.

Also would stop Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, Bundesliga and Serie A clubs competing in the Club World Cup.

Like I already said, you would think & hope that is the case but you never know with him & the $ signs lighting up his face.

I read somewhere that the S. Americans are not impressed with the idea either so that's the 2 federations with the best teams against the idea and hopefully that should be enough to put an end to this stupid idea.

Europe's got all the power. If UEFA pulled out of the WC the Euros would instantly be the biggest competition in the world not the World Cup

They certainly would but that doesn't mean they have all the power otherwise he would have been ousted or someone would stand against him yet here he is still in charge & all he's seeing is the money that will flow into his pockets, which does weird things to some people & he's more corrupt than your average person. FIFA itself could go on without the major teams if the smaller nations decide that the money on offer is too much to walk away from & where would that leave us as a small nation?

All I'm saying is that he thinks he is bigger than football & I'm not sure that he's going to back down as easily as people think. And if he doesn't where does world football go next? Not the Euros but world football in general. A total break away organization for everyone or does Europe & European teams stay on their own & just play amongst themselves for ever?

I'm not at all arguing for his ideas because he's an idiot but you seem to want to dismiss the rest of the world just because Europe has the better teams but that's not how the rest of the world (Africa & Asia in particular) see things, they think he's wonderful.

CONCACAF (federation for North America, Central America and the Caribbean) have also confirmed they are against the plan.

FIFA have 211 member countries. 55 of them are in UEFA and 41 of them are in CONCACAF.

Obviously that's not a majority yet but can't see FIFA's proposal going through now.

Euros is already the best quality tournament, outside of Brazil, Argentina, Morocco and maybe Japan the World Cup is a waste of time.

Just look at European teams who didn’t even manage to qualify

The truth is the organisation itself is rotten. The voting system is insane 1 vote per nation regardless of their actual standing in world football, it's far to open to brown envelope stuff, it's why this proposal has opened with a bribe.

I think your missing the point the money on offer does not exist if you take Europe away the major teams drive the revenue. Do you think a bunch of US investors are going to pump money into a tournament with the vast majority of the best teams missing.

Africa and Asia love him as he's delivered them money and for Asia in particular two hosting spots they never should have received. I'm not bothered what a bunch of corrupt dictatorships think should happen we've had quite enough of that.

What I'd like to see happen a second Euro's and go from there I'm sure it would morph into another World Cup eventually. Is any of this likely now? No. He's going to back down very quickly

North Central American don't like idea African group not keen on idea either .. but neither have said will boycott yet! Other areas voice concern but suspect they'll fire either infantino as they're representing smaller nations.... get impression infantino as got nowhere to go providing uefa do actually boycott WC starting with woman's wc
