As I have stated for years and years : BBM

Fri Jul 17, 2026 7:53 am

Age does not matter if your good enough.

For years to many on here state and make excuses for many of our players, that they are to young, give them more years and that’s when they have been 18, 19, 20 years old and even 21 yrs, if you’ve not made it by then their chances are very very slim.

Just look at Spain, they play them at 16,17yrs old in World Cups and are one of the best in the World.

BBM:

"I think if they're good enough and he clearly is, then they're old enough for us with Axel," Barry-Murphy said.

"It's just about using him when and where we need him really.“

“If you have what it takes then your age does not matter.”

"As young as he is, we have to be mindful of not giving him too much too soon in terms of demanding too much from him, based on his age. There's an element of that.”

"But if we need him in the coming weeks, if we haven't got players in that position, then we would use him for definite.

"He's a brilliant player."

Rooney played for Everton at 16 back then in the top division.

I remember watching Rooney on tv, from about 14 in the junior leagues, and you could tell then he was going to be good enough pre 18.

Football has become much, much more physical in the last decade or so. Players with great technical ability but poor physicality like Matt Le Tissier would struggle to get kick in the Premiership thes days.

I think this is why you see fewer 16-18 year olds playing first team football unless they have exceptional talent and are above a certain baseline for pace, strength and fitness.

So no, I disagree with the premise of this post. A lot of young players need more time.

From Alex Ferguson, to today’s Spains Manager Luis de la Fuente to our own Manager BBM all say different than you and I 100% agree with them.

A year ago I probably would have agreed but not now.

I get that it's League One but looks how young our squad was last season and we ended up getting promoted. It was brilliant to see so many from our academy playing a part.

Donczew, Tankiewicz and Mafico all impressed at times.

We got promoted without much experience in the team at all. Even the manager isn't very experienced.

Annis has mentioned Spain and what Ferguson did at Man Utd. Could also mention Arsenal, they won the Premier League and got to the final of the Champions League with a 15-year-old playing some games for them and doing well.

I also don't agree that football is more physical these days, it's less physical because there's a lower threshold for a referee giving a foul.

Sunderland got promoted twice with kids.

Agree with you last point less physical you used to shoulder barge the keeper to the ground and the likes of chopper Harris for chelsea got there nicknames for a reason, and when was the last time you so a player squeezing someone's b.llocks or biting them on the neck ,tackling from behind has stopped, all this happened so I agree it's less physical.

Bobby Charlton also 16, and you can’t get much better than that in the UK

Thank god you're not making them decisions.

Rubin was around 19/20 when he made his break through season for us Warnock said just before there was no one good enough in the academy.and won't be for years

Joel - 21 years old had his first season in the Cardiff first team

Bagan 23 Years old during his first full season playing regular at left back for the club

Cian Ashford - 20 years old in his first full season in our men's first team

Dylan currently 20 years old. Last season was his first full year in the first team

That's just 5 examples of players you would of got rid of and deemed not good enough because they didn't play regularly at 18 years old

Really well let’s see Ashford and Bagan finally make it in the Championship.

Remember who said they are all going to make it.

Your right Dylan was about 18 yrs old when he got his chance

And Joel your right 19 yrs old

That’s my point many were saying even at 18,19 & 20 yrs old still to young.

Those Top Managers including BBM must all be wrong, who do you manage??

Keep please naming all these Cardiff players you reckon have made it in the Championship???

I agree with our manager BBB, you can be 16 plus if you have the talent, then your good enough, those by 21 usually end up in lower leagues

I agree if your good enough your older enough, but it doesn't mean if you haven't made it at 18/19 you won't make it at 23/24. Football is full of players who peaked early and were finished early and those who started later. Dan Burn 34, just played a World Cup semi final at 25 he was in league 1.

“IM STILL WAITING? “

After your sarcastic comments, where’s your facts to back up you being this better manager??

First off, I apologise for the time its taken me to reply, I wasn't being rude, I am in work and sent the first response during the end of lunch break.

Now I wasn't being sarcastic with my comment, I was being genuine when I made my post. I didn't say at all if you are young enough you aren't good enough,
as you can see in my original post I actually defended the players so not sure where you think I've said they're not good enough if they are too young ?

Your original post, and the part I replied to was the comment "give them more years and that’s when they have been 18, 19, 20 years old and even 21 yrs, if you’ve not made it by then their chances are very very slim." This is not the first time you post things like that, usually its "if they haven't made it by 19/20 they aren't good enough" I recall seeing it a few times.

My response broken down a bit further, is young players (Rubin is the perfect example) develop at different stages. The majority of our current crop of young talent that has broken through all did so, after the time frame you mention "18,19,20"

Rubin didn't really start breaking through the first team until he was around 19/20. you could argue he didn't have a standout season until last year under BBM. now age 24

Joel Colwill was 20 at the start of this season. before that, at 19 he was out on loan at league two Cheltenham, and then Exeter. so at 20 is when he finally made it

Joel Bagan - had his semi-break through season with us age 20, but was rarely really starting games, and then left out on loan, two seasons ago (relegation season) he was a rotation player with O'Dowda, can't really blame him for the mess, most goals came through the middle that season. Last season at age 24 was really his breakthrough year for us being the number 1 left back

Dylan didn't feature for us regulary before last season, he is 20.

Tanner - 2/3 years ago had a failed loan spell at non league York, now he is a championship winger again next season, after an impressive return from injury last season.

You say "let's see if they finally make it to the championship" and also say "I'm saying BBM is wrong" I don't know where you got me saying "BBM is wrong" from, but you are questioning them lads if they are good enough, BBM seem's to think they are, so then does that mean you are saying he is wrong ? I am not quite sure where this is coming from, that I am claiming BBM is wrong.

My point was always, about your comments that at 18.19.20 if they haven't made it, they're not good enough. saying that clearly these lads needed until they were either given a chance, but it didn't come until they were 20+

I have always backed BBM, I know you called him and I quote "So fonder have the New Riza?, Funny their are not a line of Clubs fighting for him?" I believe at the time you were calling for an Ian Evett, or an experienced manager which is fine, I can see the logic, however previous experienced managers like say Warnock, when he was in charge of the first team, Cardiff city had in their academy "Joel Bagan, Rubin, Joel Colwill, Isaak Davies" and Warnock came out and said "they just weren't good enough to get in the first team and I don't think they will be in the next few years." in regards to the U23s. which they would of been a part of.

I am all for healthy debate on here, one thing I do enjoy as we all see the game differently. However it then gets a bit childish with some responses with things like "well who have you managed" and then a follow up I seen just now saying "still waiting"

TLDR - Age shouldn't matter, Totally disagree with the "if you haven't made it by 18/19/20" you won't.

Mostly the reason for no young players is simply managers over the years not playing them ... its taken bbm for whatever reason a need or an eye for young players to give them the opportunity .......but will say some not ready even though bbm plays them alot l

The thing is Allan is every manager goes into the interview and says "yeah I'll use your young players".

But most of them don't when it comes to league games. BBM actually meant it when he said he would. Remember walking to the stadium for the first game against Peterborough last season and being shocked at how many young players started, but it worked.

progr to put 2st team

Also might add monty..... the really really talented players generally are picked up by man c ect ect for their academy when only around 14! So we don't get to see them in 1st team squad... luckily for us lawler Colwill ect were not deemed good enough for the likes man c ect Lawlor can make it not sure Colwill (rubin) will make it but Joel could

Re: As I have stated for years and years : BBM

I think it’s all dependant on each players physical development. When I was younger there was a boy in our class who was always the shortest, by some way, at the age of 16 he was still called Bilbo Bryan.

Seen him again when he was 20 and he had shot up and was the same height as me which I’d say is average, but I had my growth between 14-16 and his was in his later years.

I know Rubin had a late growth, and imagine with that comes complications for muscle and joint pains if trying to do too much.

I agree for the most part that if you’re good enough you’re old enough, providing your body is ready

Re: As I have stated for years and years : BBM

Sun Jul 19, 2026 7:28 am

If you’re really good enough, age does not really matter in the majority of players that’s the truth.
The Top Managers All Say this including our own BBM.

Players by the age of 20/21 yrs old still being sent to other Clubs out on loan 99% of the time at Cardiff City will not make it in the Championship a Fact.
