Scotland manager Steve Clarke resigns after Scotland knocked out

Steve Clarke has resigned as Scotland head coach after they were knocked out of the World Cup.

Scotland failed to make it out of the group stage, beating Haiti in their opening game before losing to Morocco and then Brazil.

Clarke has stepped down from his position as Scotland's most successful coach after seven years in charge, having only signed a
new four-year contract in May.

The 62-year-old led the Tartan Army to their first World Cup in 28 years after qualifying for the Euros twice.

Clarke said: "The most emotional part of this goodbye is for my players, without whom we wouldn’t have had any of the memories that we’ve accumulated from 2019 until now.

"They deserve all the praise and adulation that they receive and it was truly an honour to be called their gaffer.

"Thanks for having me and good luck to my successor

It was always going to happen in truth. Glad they got there. Irrelevant of where your from, like others, I always look out for the home nations in all tournaments (except England )

Let's be honest they went there scored a deflected goal Vs Haiti a team I've never even heard off before, got beat by Morocco and couldn't score then messed up at the back Vs Brazil which could of been alot worse of a scoreline which again was expected.

Got a few Scottish mates. I bet they’re gutted , but it was expected I'd say, if your a neutral. Just how football goes.

I found it strange that Clarke and Tuchel signed new contracts before the tournament even started. Clarke has now gone, Tuchel will too if England don't make the quarter finals.

I don't think Clarke conducted himself with class. Walking out of interviews during a World Cup is not a good look.

Your right Worcester no class at all shown there, which is a shame as he’s done more than what a lot would have thought. To pack on his job like this shows what a big baby he is, and may be the best for Scotland going forward. I mean really what did he expect to happen win the thing.

The Scottish FA's chief executive says "nothing's off the table" in replacing Steve Clarke as national head coach, a process that "starts now".

The surprise announcement of Clarke stepping down quickly followed confirmation that Scotland could not progress to the World Cup knockout rounds. The head coach had agreed a new four-year contract just prior to the tournament.

The Scots opened Group C with a 1-0 win over Haiti but defeat by the same score by Morocco and a 3-0 loss to Brazil dampened chances of reaching the round of 32 as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Results elsewhere ultimately placed Scotland 11th of the 12 teams to finish third at the group stage.

"Football's a very, very small world," SFA chief executive Ian Maxwell said in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the Scotland team have been based.

"I've woken up this morning to a few messages from people that are interested in the job.

"Nothing's off the table. We need to cast the net as far and wide as we can. It's about getting the right coach, it's not about necessarily where they come from. There's a lot of good managers out there and it's up to us to make sure that we pick the right one.
