BBC presenter slams American directors at World Cup

Tue Jun 16, 2026 7:48 pm

BBC presenter Mark Chapman has had his say on American directors' video choices at the World Cup:

"Although, am I being a bit grumpy here when I say I'm fed up of cutaways to famous people in the crowd?

"I mean, listen, we do it in this country as well, and it winds me up. Like, I heard Colin say this yesterday – I know that Noel Gallagher's at a City game, I don't need to see him every time!

"But now it's like [David] Beckham and [Tom] Cruise… Rod Stewart 27 times the other night at Foxborough!

"Occasionally on some live games that I've done, when you do the build-up, and occasionally they've then cut someone up in the crowd, and I've looked out and I've thought, 'I've absolutely no idea who [that is].'

"And then they'll tell me in my ear who it is, and I'm thinking, 'I still have absolutely no idea who that is!'"

Seriously?????? There's way more important things to get wound up about, or maybe I'm just used to it now.

I like Chappers and I agree with him.

I watch a bit of NHL and NBA and it winds me up on that. It's not something European audiences are used to, we are getting constant shots of celebrities in the crowd.

Saw people on twitter say one of them was cutting to an ex adult film star in the crowd which is a bit weird for a family audience.

Well the only way anyone would know that would be from watching porn so I doubt any kids watching would have the faintest idea who the hell it is. It is annoying when the director or whoever thinks that's more important than what is going on in the game though, any game. Basketball seems to be the worse offender as the courtside seats are usually filled with "celebrities", especially for the finals games.

Although i agree there are more important things to worry about , why the hell do i want to see a clip of some self so called celebrodary. Though I did like the comment of Jonathan Davies when they showed a clip of Prince of Wales sitting in the WRU box with Gerald Davies behind him. Something along the lines of "There he is - Gerald Davies". :D

In fairness I'm not seeing much in the way of celebrities yet but rather footballers like Zidane watching his son & Gareth Bale with his son etc. and mostly when there is a break in play. I'm sure the actual celebrities will start appearing if USA gets further like the NBA finals which was unbearably full of "celebrities" getting shown every 2 minutes.

Because they're one of the two national broadcasters for the World Cup. This is BBC Sport we're talking about, not the politics part of the BBC.

It would be great if some 'name' person could complain about the absolutely awful American commentators that those of us that live in the USA have to listen to. There are times when I've tuned to the Spanish channel just to get away from them. The only thing worse on TV sports is the American coverage of the Olympics.

Lmao. Fair play I can imagine it.
I’ve not watched any of it think international football is shit. I can only imaging what the yanks have done to it I’m surprised they haven’t split it into quarters and have a concert at every break. lol.

I think they’re doing okay. You have to remember they’re talking to a majority who are watching football for the first time & I’m not sure what you expect of them.
