Donald Trump will be allowed to join World Cup trophy lift

Tue Jun 16, 2026 11:24 am

Donald Trump has been given license to join the World Cup winners in their trophy lift, as he did at the Club World Cup.

It is understood FIFA have no objection to Trump breaking presentation protocol and handing the World Cup trophy directly to the winning captain, and remaining in the thick of the celebrations.

The US president has already been told FIFA wish him to hand over the World Cup trophy to the eventual champions.

Both Mexican and Canadian officials will be invited to appear at the closing ceremony.

Trump raised eye-brows at the Club World Cup when he stayed next to Chelsea captain Reece James as he lifted the trophy.

Cole Palmer looked particuarly confused standing right behind the US president, while FIFA president Gianni Infantino tried to initially usher Trump away, only to later encourage him to stay put.

FIFA protocol is usually for the trophy to remain on a plinth and be carried by a member of the winning team onto the celebration podium.

Sources say FIFA will leave it to Trump's own discretion as to whether he wishes to stay in with the team during the lift or remain with other executives during the ceremony.

White House insiders believe Trump will again choose to celebrate with the victorious team.

Trump did not attend the USMNT's opening victory over Paraguay due to a scheduling conflict, but is set to be at the World Cup Final at the MetLife Stadium on July 19.

White House sources have not ruled out the president, who turned 80 on Sunday, catching multiple games.

His schedule is constantly subject to change, but Infantino has also informed him he has full license to present the World Cup trophy in any way he sees fit.

This isn't anything new in world cups, remember this last time out. This is what happens when the hosting process becomes about brown envelopes and under the table deals instead of looking for places with infrastructure and football traditions

What you've referred to was at the last World Cup, nothing like this before.

It's all on Infantino. He's sold himself and football to the highest bidder.

The man has no shame.

No shame indeed!

In your wildest dreams, can you imagine Trump handing over the World Cup to the Iran captain, whilst ‘pocketing’ another ‘winners’ medal in the process (as he did at the Workd Club Final)?

Didn't the Queen as head of state of the host nation hand the cup over to Bobby Moore? Though in this case both Canada and Mexico are hosts and I cant remember Putin doing it in 2018 though he might have

As it says in the article, the policy is for the trophy to be on a plinth and the captain to then take it to the celebration podium to lift it. Pretty sure that's what happened in Qatar.

Of course, in the Club World Cup last year Trump stayed on the stage and celebrated with the Chelsea team which was bizarre. Cole Palmer's face was hilarious, he was clearly wondering what Trump was going there.

The Queen may have given the trophy to Bobby Moore in 1966 but I assume the FIFA policy was different then.

And she would have done it with a bit more dignity than Trump will do it. Probably be wearing MAGA hat at the same time and making sure he gets in all the pictures
