Gareth Bale in fresh Cardiff City takeover claim as he launches new private investment fund

The winger made an unsuccessful attempt to buy his hometown club last year

Gareth Bale says he's still not ruled out a move to buy hometown club Cardiff City after launching a new sports investment fund.

The fund, named Juggernaut Diversified Sports, will aim to invest in teams and leagues across men's and women's sport, with a particularly keen focus on North America and Europe.

Speaking to Front Office Sports, Bale says investing in the Bluebirds is still a possibility, having previously fronted a consortium that had a bid knocked back by current owner Vincent Tan.

The Wales legend said he and John Shulman, founder of Juggernaut Capital Partners, the private-equity firm that has helped launch the fund, need to look at potential club investments from a business point of view.

GARETH BALE:

However, he added that with Cardiff "there's those heartstrings that pull there".

“It’s about being patient, finding the right club, and the right path for us to take,” Bale said. “That doesn’t mean Cardiff is off the table. But I think now we have a bit of time, and will look around.”

Bale made little secret of his desire to buy the club when quizzed last summer.

"It's where I was born. It's where I grew up," he told FOS at the time.

"I think that's what's torn on those heartstrings a little bit more, and got me a little bit more motivated to get involved again and back into football. Because it is my home club.

"It's probably a club that's been on the decline for a number of years now.

"For me, I feel like it's the right time. I have a lot of friends who are Cardiff fans that also agree with me.

"It's time a new ownership came in maybe and gave it that fresh boost.

"Some fresh ideas, and some excitement back to the club, where we could potentially go forward again.

"But because I'm from that city, it has a little more meaning and I guess it gives me more motivation to be involved and to get behind the ownership group."

My opinion is unchanged from last summer, I don't want Bale to buy this club.

I know I'm probably in the minority and others feel different.

Ned,

His Bid was shocking and unbelievable low last time approx £30 Mill when Tan wanted £120 Mill

So I can’t take this Seriously

I remember hearing the offer was embarrassingly low, didn't understand why Bale was speaking to the media about it when that's all they offered.

I also didn't like that Americans were involved, a lot of the time they don't help clubs move forward. Bale would have just been the public face of it, it's the Americans that would have the money and the control.

Your correct Ned,

And it was a very embarrassing low bid which was not even considered.

I hope it happens. That would give a massive boost to the club! Fans will come back and even gain new fans with a good buzz around the place. Especially with the way we are trying to play football with BBM. Perfect time.

Until they asset strip the club.

Don’t want to get dragged into the Bale-hype and make a wrong decision. On the face of it, it’s attractive, but who are the backers and how much say will they have in the running of the club?

Seems like a vanity project for Bale, leveraging his local roots. He never played for City so he can’t love it that much.

Bale being involved will grab headlines, but there needs to be a credible plan with proven staff and pathways. That’s even before Vincent entertains a conversation on it!

I know you don’t like the idea of Americans owning the club but anybody could come in and asset strip. The other alternative is sticking with Tan. But would Bale put his name on the line if that was their intentions? Definitely not.

What makes you think that would be their only goal rather than promotion & raising the profile of the club? And what assets do you think they would strip? It's not like they could sell the ground so what do we have that they could sell to make money?

I'm not saying that you're right or wrong just interested in how you came to that conclusion.

I don't think Tan will sell yet though.

I also don't see Tan selling this club anytime soon.

You're right, I don't know any of that for sure. But just like others don't know that it'll suddenly improve the club.

I've made this point before and people have said "Bale wouldn't let that happen", but the point is I don't believe he would have much say in how the club is run. The people with the money are the people with the power in a football club, and it won't be Bale putting in the money.

I think it's a romantic thought but not a romantic reality. I would probably rather keep Tan than have this, I say that as someone who wants Tan to sell.

"There's those heartstrings that pull there"

Are those the same heartstrings that pulled Bale over to the USA when he had the opportunity to join his beloved hometown club a few years ago?

We cannot have it both ways.

Most want Tan gone but then others say no to a Bale consortium.

What about the Bale consortium join the board?

Tan would easily benefit from the added publicity and still be around to stop any asset stripping.

I've already said that as much as I hope Tan sells, I'd rather him than Bale and the Americans. Some might say it's a flawed argument, but that's my opinion.

I would have been happy with the South African bid.

Did we get to the bottom of that bid after? I remember there were people guessing who was involved.

There's nothing to strip apart from a couple of young players who would not be worth anything like the price paid to buy Tan out. The ground itself is worthless without a team to play in it. That's what the stumbling block will always be. Tan wants a lot of his money back but the club just isn't worth it as it has very little asset value.
