“ BBM WANTS FOR KEY SIGNINGS “

Cardiff City don't intend to - simply rip up a squad that delivered promotion. Equally, standing still is not an option. The Championship exposes weaknesses ruthlessly and there are areas of Barry-Murphy's squad that need strengthening if Cardiff are to avoid merely battling for survival.

The Championship is a much higher level of football compared to League one and who really knows if many of last seasons players will shine like they did at a lower level?

“ Four key signings “

Cardiff are targeting four specific positions this summer; a powerful midfielder, a winger, a left-back and a striker.

Of those, the midfield role perhaps feels the most significant.

Ryan Wintle's departure removes not only a key player from last season's side but also gives Cardiff the opportunity to reshape the entire profile of their midfield. Wintle's qualities were obvious, but the Championship demands a different level of athleticism and physicality.

Cardiff have technical players in abundance. David Turnbull, Alex Robertson, Rubin Colwill and Joel Colwill all want possession. What they arguably lack is a physically dominant presence capable of winning duels, protecting the defence and helping the side become more effective at both attacking and defending set pieces.

The ideal recruit would be an imposing No.6 who allows Cardiff's creators to flourish further forward.

The need at left-back is almost as obvious. Join the Cardiff City breaking news and top stories WhatsApp community.

Joel Bagan enjoyed an excellent campaign and deserved his place in the League One Team of the Season, but Cardiff cannot afford to enter a Championship season with no genuine competition for his shirt.

If Cardiff could secure quality in all four positions, they would give themselves a genuine platform for a comfortable Championship campaign and be looking at mid table .

Solving the Lawlor problem

The biggest transfer battle of Cardiff's summer might not involve signing anyone. It could revolve around keeping Dylan Lawlor.

Interest in the Wales international is real and substantial. Sources indicate clubs from the Championship, Europe and the United States have been monitoring the defender, while West Ham United are known admirers.

It is easy to understand why.

Modern football places enormous value on centre-backs comfortable in possession, capable of defending large spaces and possessing the athleticism to operate in progressive systems. Lawlor ticks every box.

This is good news - and if Tan backs BBM with these 4 then ever better news :bluescarf:

The only slight thought in the back of my mind is that we had a small squad last year which in my opinion (although maybe not others) was risky

Now we are down Wintle, Scanlon & Kellyman - 4 signings will only be an additional +1 player on last year

I trust BBM of course but an additional few on top of last year would be a good step in my view

Good news, trust his judgement - as I did last summer.

It will always been quality over quantity with him.

Gone are the days we sign ten players in a summer window that nobody else wants and that's a good thing in my opinion.

I agree about players that are no longer here we have to replace ,
we need a bigger squad and quality players we cannot go with what we gave this time around.

With regards Lawlor I see it as an easy decision. The boy is happy with us, his value is only going to go up, it's not a McGuiness situation where you have to cash in, he'll be worth at least what he is now if not substantially more this time next year.... Unless a mega offer comes in why on earth would you sell

If we manage to get Kellyman back, willit still be 4? Or is this assuming he has gone and not returning.

The reason? If he returns and we get 3 more... it doesn't massively increase tue size of the squad.

I trust BBM, but my vision as a fan only says if we replace Wintle, and get Scanlon and Kellyman back, we are only adding 1 to our squad which willthen remain paper thin for a tough campaign.

The defence worries me slightly.

We were vulnerable last season from corners and other set pieces and I'd like to see us sign a no nonsense, tough, experienced centre back because for me, Chambers is not up to it at Championship level.

4 permanent signings plus 2 or 3 good loans and we'll be fine. i trust bbm to get the right players at the right price for the club, something i havent said about a manager fir far too long

Re: “ BBM WANTS FOUR KEY SIGNINGS “

Is Tan going to give bbm a pot of gold? or ask him to work more miracles with a threadbare squad,

wintle kellyman scanlon all gone, has BBM been told to sell lawlor for funds from within ?
we shall see what develops.

This is what I feel we should be doing if we want to survive this season and push for top half

A lot of people are very optimistic but looking at the teams this year there are so many tough clubs to face. I wouldn't be surprised if Wolves, Burnley & West Ham all go back up

Monty He's just saying need 4 key positions filled? But that doesn't mean that's all the sighnings he wants.... what he's looking for may come slightly expensive so could get cheap or loans to fill squad up....

I get what you're saying but remember that people said last summer that our squad was too small and we'd have no chance of top six, never mind top two.

Of course the Championship is different but it also says four key signings, he may bring in one or two more as fringe players.

The days of us having a huge squad is over. He has said before he thinks our squads in the past have been way too big and he was right.

For me, the target this season isn't play-offs. It's a nice boring season of consolidation and I think we will do that with the right additions.

I think it will be 4 key signings plus a couple of young loans , I said we will bring in 6 or 7 over the summer and 1 or 2 will go , remember you can name 9 subs in the championship instead of 7 in league one so a slightly bigger squad is needed

I understood what he said 4 key players i pointed out we had 3 players in key positions gone,

so if kellyman does not come back that's 3 to replace in key positions .
He may very well bring in 6 players

With extra subs being able to be named im hoping we have a goalkeeper on the bench every game next season
I was so nervous last season

I think we will.

The problem we had last season was he was limited to having only six outfield players on the bench if he had a GK there. Now he can have a GK and eight outfield players which is much better.

Don't know the reason why there's seven subs in L1 and L2 but nine in the Championship.

Quality over Quantity - Again this season :bluebird:

Tony, I think you’re right; and last season should be an indicator of what is to come!

BBM has been consistent in his assertion that he wants quality over quantity and he wants players who can/will fit into his system

Coupled with the young signings we’ve made in recent months, including the goalkeeper, plus those who have renewed their contracts in recent weeks, I think adding around 4 ‘quality’ players in the right positions would be about right

I just hope those on here who think we’re going to majorly overhaul the squad, and spend money like it’s going out of fashion on ‘established’ players, take a step back and look at how BBM actually works

Only time will tell, but he had a settled, united, and effective squad last year, and he can do again this coming season :ayatollah:

I'd like it to be Harry Souttar. Although the 4 key targets mentioned above in the opening post are great, we need that big physical lump at centre back too...I feel Soutar is exactly that and I'm pretty sure he's good on the deck too.

5 or 6 proper better signings and we could do ok without them it will be a dog fight in my opinion as some have failed in the championship although different manager and set up but we shall see what he's given come kick off first game :bluescarf:
