He wanted and increase of at least 28 billion he was offered 13 billion by Rachel from accounts but she found 18 billion more on welfare,
Starmer Just resign and take your awful government with you .
They the government, are like a bunch of 6 formers having to run the school after the teachers have left ,totally clueless.

Well done to him, shown integrity.
Fortunate enough to have met John several times and he cares deeply about the job he was doing. He is respected in other countries too.
The problem is that Starmer doesn't have the authority to cut other departments' budget to pay for the extra money in defence (which is much needed).
But I respect John a lot and even more for the decision he's made here.

Ned I agree on his resignation its a shame starmer does not fall on his sword he has banged on, its our first and formost priority is defence of the realm ,but it seems welfare is more important.

0.08% upto 2030 is all the increase was going to be, after saying how important defence is ,starmer absolytly full of sh.te in what he says.

Strange how we can find billions for Ukraine but nothing for the defence of our own country?
Thu Jun 11, 2026 1:33 pm
As long as starmer looks good on the international scene that's all he cares about acting the big man

This is the new narrative...
All of our country's defence is shot to pieces and we are "defenceless".
The solution: crank up the taxes and fork out for new shiny subs, tanks, guns etc.
The country is falling apart but we have blown a sack load on Ukraine for what some would call "war".
"War is a racket"...Read the short book by Gen. Smedley Butler. Absolutely brilliant.

Liebour sent us into Iraq with shit kit and good men lost there lives because of it, all parties have slowly chipped away at it for years and we are now at the point that if the Argies decided to invade the Falklands we couldnt do anything. Billions spent on a vehicle that is crap and a moving death machine, helicopters that dont work, no planes to put on flight decks. We are hounding Veterans because of actions they took years ago yet murderers are free.
As a military force we are spent but the military will always be the best fighting force in the World no matter the defence budget, we have the best trained SF, best trained Infantry and Commando Brigade that other countries are jealous off. It is the politicians of all parties who are the weakness in our Defence

The people of this country should demand to be protected by the government of the day not told a pack of lies from someone like starmer and his leader lord hermer .

The total defence budget is 60 billion and the welfare budget
333 billion and our entire total army is 72,000.shocking.

And that's the problem. The PM had the chance to sort the welfare bill out but bottled it because he couldn't control his own MPs. That is one of several reasons I believe he's incapable of leading the party and, more importantly, the country.

Ned
I agree and that's you as a labour supporter saying that,
he is dragging your party down

I don't see any circumstance that doesn't end up with Starmer getting the boot over the next few months. I'd be shocked if Burnham doesn't win in Makerfeild and even if he doesn't how many disasters can you survive

Surely whoever takes over as PM would face the same problems, with the back benchers.

And they'd have to control them in a much better way.
Starmer doesn't even speak to his MPs other than cabinet members. There are loads of the 2024 intake that haven't even spoke to him. Networking with your MPs is half the job when it comes to getting them to vote for a policy they don't completely agree with or on the fence about. If he had communicated with them better, the job of getting that bill through would have been a lot easier.

Ned, John Healey was probably the roundest peg in the roundest hole in the current Cabinet and I echo your words about ‘
caring’ and ‘
integrity’
As I heard someone say on radio today, we really need someone at the top now, with a cohesive and workable strategy, who can (proverbially) bang a few heads together and say “
Oi, No! This is my show, this is how you will do it, and if you cannot/will not, I will wave bye bye, we’ll write each other a polite departure letter, then you can return to the backbenches behind you!”
Time for strong leadership with strength and vision!; but who could that be?

When you break the figures down (2025 figures) it is even more scandalous.
Defence of the realm Dwarfs the proportional spend compared to welfare(social protection) and Health spending.
Pie chart shows it better.

This govt has bolloxed up the economy of our wonderful country but is that just crap economics or one part of a bigger plan?
Crashing the economy and flooding the UK with migrants are just two parts of a narrative of changing the demographics of the UK.
Any deep study of Fabian principles reveals these two objectives amongst a host of other ideals can slowly change a country's whole demographic.
I'm not gonna bleat on as I've commented on too many political threads recently but we're heading to a very dark place under the leadership of Starmerface and Hermer.

Said it before and I'll say it again, of course this government have to take some of the blame for not effectively dealing with migrants. But we can't ignore that it was already a big issue when they came into office.
As for crashing the economy, that's just not true. The economy was already crashed by the Tories (to be fair, the war in Ukraine was a big impact for them). The economy has actually grown, albeit by a very small margin.
I don't mind people making fair criticisms because there are plenty to choose from, but will still defend when I think it's not fair criticism.
When it comes to Starmer, fair chance he won't be PM by September. I've been up to the constituency of Makerfield a few times and will be again, cautiously optimistic that Andy will win but it will be close. If he does win, Starmer can't beat him in a leadership contest (even though he says he will, I don't actually think Starmer would stand against Burnham in a leadership election because he knows he'd lose). You speak about the Fabian Society a lot so I'd add that Burnham isn't a member, unlike Starmer.
When you say "lead us to a dark place", that's just your opinion. I would argue that Farage would lead us to a dark place, that's my opinion. Different viewpoints.
