Official - Joel Bagan signs new contract

City left-back Joel Bagan has today penned a new four-year contract with the Bluebirds.

Our number three has committed his future to the Club until the summer of 2030.

Joel has been a key player for the Bluebirds since Brian Barry-Murphy came to the Club, making 52 appearances across the promotion winning League One season. His quality and consistency were rewarded with an inclusion in the EFL League One Team of the Year.

Bagan initially joined City’s academy in 2018 as an apprentice after completing his schoolboy years with Southampton. He would make his First Team debut two years later in the Emirates FA Cup clash against Reading. Overall, Joel has appeared 130 times in City blue, scoring on four occasions.

Speaking about this new agreement, Joel said: “I’m delighted to be extending my stay at this Club.

“I’ve been here since I was 16 and it feels like home. Last season was so special and I’m excited for what the future will bring now.

“I think it is a great time to be a Cardiff City player!”

Great business again. NG and Bagan are championship quality.

Brilliant news.

He was my player of the season last year. Could not fault his fitness, dedication and that winner against Doncaster was superb!

I like Bagan, no thrills but he is a solid choice left back.

Superb news Bagan was class last season and will step up to be solid in championship. He needs competition for his place to push him further

Regardless of the reason what went down with Wintle I think BBM has more say in this window more than the board and I don’t think you can argue that Tan as board are dictating now Bagan signed.

With Trott permanent it’s clear BBM is focusing on securing strength and depth in defence and focus on midfield and strikers (attackers) in the window.

Good news glad he's signed

He's the most consistent LB we've had at the club in a long time

Get in there!

Needed this after yesterday's shock. 130 odd appearances too, experienced and still so young.

I really really hope he’s improved at Championship level.

Championship level is way way higher than League 1

My View: I reserve my judgement

To be fair though he’s on a very low wage.

Great news! Joel is one of my favourite players and has come on leaps and bounds!

Congratulations and good decision! :bluebird: :bluescarf: :ayatollah:

Bagan and NG signed RW not offered a new contract. I think it’s pretty clear this was a management decision not to renew RW’s deal, and has nothing to do with the board not backing BBM.

Buzzing Bagan has committed because consistent left-backs don’t grow on trees, and there would’ve been Championship interest in him, including from Spyhampton.

Richly deserved and could be our most important signing well done Joel

Tan decides the budget, not BBM.

BBM has to work to that budget.

Bagan is on a low wage and was happy to sign.

Tan makes the decisions.

I agree. He struggled a bit in the championship but hopefully he's matured and learnt from his excellent last season.

Glad he signed

One of our own. BBM thinks he’s capable enough to step up and make an impact, then it’s great news.

So we've let 1 of 3 out of contract players go & resigned the other, can't argue with that whoever has the final word.

I'm delighted he's staying but he's not one of our own. He started his career at Southampton, which is why so many of us were worried about the rumours linking him with a return there.

There is not a single professional football club in the country where the manager is deciding the budget himself

2 defenders sign a new contract and keeper signed permanent can see BBM has a say and their all working together.

Made the L1 team of the season so may have been interested in him.

Great to get him signed up.

BBM will definitely tell the board who he wants and doesn't want but his decision making is governed by tans budget and tan has the final decision not BBM.

That’s the 1st choice keeper and defence sorted before the window opens as they’re all on decent length contracts now.
Onto midfield and upfront.

Exactly right Mike and that applies to virtually all football clubs.

It applied to us when Tan released big money for some of our ex managers and they wasted a lot on huge sums for shite players.
Tan had his fingers burnt and now is reluctant to trust again.

For me, I prefer the way BBM is going about things instead of spending 5mill or more on a player who’s a gamble anyway.
