Similarities between Rubin's header at Reading and....

Mon Apr 20, 2026 4:48 pm

....none other than a certain John Toshack.

Mad idea here, but rather than exasperating us in midfield on the more than odd occasion, what are your thoughts of Rubin as a target man? A La Toshack?

I was struck with how similar Rubin looks to Toshack in height and build, and the way he rose and powered that header was reminiscent of JT in his Cardiff/Liverpool days.

Definitely be worth a go and could work. Be great if it did. He needs something to help him fulfill his potential as he not suited to where he plays now.
It’s a great shout would be great to see in the last three games.
Won’t hold my breath though.

This post is an all time classic.

Look at Rubin in the air when he connects with the ball. His legs are spread, his arms are stuck up. He's totally off balance but he does direct the ball well. Toshack on the other hand always looked totally in control when he rose to head a ball. Chalk and cheese compared to Rubin.

Rubin's goal was what we'll need an attacking midfielder to do in the Championship. BBM said much the same after Saturday's match.

But playing him up front? No.

Criticised him in the past but he's had a big part in our promotion and he's always best between the lines.

He is awful at heading the ball if you have watched him during his time in the first team Reading was an exception and a goal is a goal but it looked so awkward

He is shocking at heading a football...and Toshack was a king......still is...

We are a poor heading team, as most of football is today. Can't blame players with all the issues of brain damage. Cannot compare any current players with those of the past. Nearest we come to a throwback is Morrison at CB...but most sides in 70 80 90 had players like him. I still think Brian Clarke was one of our best.

Didn't Warnock say that he was a good player but that he couldn't head a ball to save his life.

And yet at least 2 of his goals this season have come from his bonce.

I think I'd have to vote this post as the daftest one for a very long time...I was lucky enough to watch Tosh play for us and cried into my Echo when Liverpool came calling, but Ruben has to be one of the worst headers of a football known to man.

I get it he scored a good headed goal, and well done to him, but mate have a word with yourself, Tosh he is not!

Well he didn't do badly with the ones he has scored with his head this season. Good header tonight. Didn't see much sign of a 50p shaped head on his shoulders.

If he can work on his headers even more, then I'd be quite happy to see him carrying on scoring header.

The tone of my original post was to point out that Rubin's build and height was similar to Tosh, who I also saw in my youth at City, and that's it really. I was pointing out that Rubin COULD make a good target man with work so not really daft at all, it was meant to spark a debate. Fine that you have an opinion that's different and I respect that, but Rubin, despite being in your opinion the worst header of a ball, facts are that in recent weeks he has scored three with his head.

I agree he has scored 3 with his head and frankly I am delighted he has - but away from scoring a goal, he hardly ever heads the ball, mostly he just looks at it, and I think that is what colours my view of his heading abilities.

Anyhow - delighted with his headed goal, ghosting in at the back post like Martin Peters :notworthy:

Martin Peters!! That takes me back and I remember vividly how he used to ghost in at the back post. He was my favourite player when I was a kid and when I got older I used tell my son when he was playing junior football. to "Come in on the back post like Martin Peters" He didnt have a clue who i was on about.
