BREAKING: SHEFF WEDS HIT WITH 15 POINT DEDUCTION

Fri Apr 17, 2026 6:55 am

Sheffield Wednesday's preferred bidder, David Storch, confirmed on 15 April 2026 that the EFL has informed him the club will start the 2026/27 League One season with a 15-point deduction.
BBC Sport

The penalty is a consequence of the proposed £20 million takeover bid by Storch’s consortium, Arise Capital Partners, which does not meet the EFL’s "25p in the pound" repayment requirement for unsecured creditors.

Key Details of the Deduction

Mandatory Rule: EFL regulations require new owners to pay unsecured creditors at least 25% of what they are owed to avoid a 15-point penalty upon exiting administration.

The Shortfall: Storch’s current bid reportedly offers roughly 6p in the pound, largely because outgoing owner Dejphon Chansiri is the club's primary creditor (owed approximately £60m–£64m) and bidders are unwilling to pay him the required £15m–£16m to waive the penalty.

Appeal Rejected: Storch requested independent arbitration to review the decision, citing the "unique" and "distressed" nature of the club’s situation, but the EFL has denied this request.

Broader Financial Crisis
The club has endured a historically poor 2025/26 campaign, having already been relegated from the Championship in February after suffering 18 points in deductions earlier this season (12 for entering administration and 6 for financial breaches).

Additionally, the club remains under a three-window transfer fee restriction until January 2027 due to persistent late wage payments, although the new owners are in talks with the EFL to potentially lift this early.

Despite the confirmed points handicap, David Storch has stated that Arise Capital still intends to complete the takeover by 1 May 2026.

Is this the guy that was backing Bale to take over Cardiff?

You've got to have some sympathy for the Wednesday fans, they've always followed their club in big numbers and probably don't deserve this.

Feel sorry for their fans but these are the rules and obviously have to be applied.

League One next season could be difficult to call.

If Leicester go down then you'd have two of the sides relegated from the Championship in a complete mess.

Wednesday obviously won't come straight back up and I don't think Leicester would either.

The rules need to be changed immediately. Wednesday's fans and new owners are punished for things that happened under the previous regime crap! The championship relegation battle has been decided in a court room instead of the pitch and West Brom may be docked points in the next couple of weeks

Whilst feel for Wednesdays fans ... I'm glad he didn't get city as efl rules state if a club is in administration unsecured debt must be paid at 25p in the pound he offered 6pence!! Wednesday are a big club and worth every penny of £20m ... but needs owners willing to invest big even if its over couple seasons...so whilst last owner was terrible these points are down to new owners unwilling to meet efl rules .

Why are they worth every penny? The only upside is the fan base. They've got a very old ground and a squad that would struggle in league 2. Your simply buying history

Going on fan base I was! Yes ground chronically bad that's why said needs to invest big otherwise they'll just linger around 1st div for years probably... if get things right at Wednesday they are far bigger than city! Not sure why new owners are happy to take 15 point deduction do they have the money to take club forward If not why are they buying it? It's one thing buying cub another to take it forward .... bit like city and Tan ...at moment tan owns club but doesn't appear to have finances to take us forward so why hold onto us.

There has to be a reasonable link between existing and new owners when debt is involved. To prevent anyone just running up a sh*t load of debt to try and buy players, then just cut and run and put the company through for a new owner to come in with a clean slate. That’s extremely unfair on other clubs in the division.
It’s a harsh requirement but they’ve got to have some measures to slow down someone who wants to game the system.
