What is your first choice midfield three?

Postby worcester_ccfc » Mon Apr 06, 2026 5:05 pm

There's been a lot of talk about our best midfield three, not just today but for a while.

So what would your first choice be?

The players included in this are obviously the six, eight and ten positions with the following players having time played in those positions this season:

Wintle
Robertson
Turnbull
Joel Colwill
Rubin Colwill
Omari Kellyman

There's a poll on this thread and you can vote for the three players you think should be first choice.

For me, Wintle and Robertson should be automatic starters.

I'm not a big fan of Turnbull.

So the final place is between Rubin, Joel and Kellyman.

It's tough to decide because they all have qualities but because of his running abilities and work rate, I would just say Joel.

I’d love to see Joel have a run in the team. He brings that extra energy, drive and can arrive in the box late that Turnball just doesn’t have.

Wintle is a given so I’d like to see Rubin given a deeper role.

Why o why hes tried to accommodate Rubin , his stubbornness will be his downfall , he is a class act , but only one in 5 games , we were on fire until he come in , lets go back to the drawing board

If we can all see this, why can't the manager??

It's not just the manager. Look in other threads. Blame is being deflected to not signing a striker in January despite us looking great up until the point Rubin went back into the team. BBM just will not leave him out

In fairness Rubin was on fire before his injury but hasn't shown the same form since coming back, can't really fault him for effort though.

Just out of interest, why no Robertson? Normally enjoy your posts and you have a good, informed view so genuinely interested in the answer because I think Robertson is one of our best players.

Think he would have started today if he hadn't had a long flight back from Australia.

I watched Turnbull for a period on Monday and he seems to do as little as possible when he has not got the ball and then is pretty happy to just pass it to someone two foot away from him when he has. Not sure what Joel has done wrong to be honest to not be starting.

That’s a good question to me and I agree with regards to Robertson.

I think Rubin’s best position would be in a deep role dictating play and I think that’s where he’ll probably end up later in his career. Yesterday he was found to be often hanging around in the penalty area waiting for a cross or a pass which I think is a wasted position for him.

Can’t argue with Robertson being in the 3 I’d just like to see Rubin given a chance there.

Good answer and I tend to agree. It’s certainly worth a shot doing that with Rubin and I feel he may be happier with that role himself!

For the remainder of this season, I don’t think we have better than Wintle and Robertson as a pairing and then the ability to adjust the ‘third’ midfielder depending on our opponents

I think David Turnbull is good on the ball but for me, a choice of of Rubin or Joel Colwill, as Kellyman can go ‘missing’ on occasions as he learns this tough League

My choice 3: Wintle, Robertson, Rubin Colwill :ayatollah:
This is OUR club, not Vincent Tan’s! He is a temporary custodian and will be judged on the state he leaves us in when he leaves!

He's not listed but Chambers is a thought, has abilities to score , sit in front of back 3 or 4 , can push forward. , physical in challenge, as with a lot of our older players carriers injuries.

For me, it depends who's fit and upfront. Rubin & Kellyman isnt working.

I went for Wintle, Robertson and Rubin. Id have no issue with Joel coming in for any of that trio though.

For me, while he has the ability to change a game on his day, you often have to question Rubin's decision making - he holds on to the ball for too long and his balance is also quite poor.

I believe Joel is the better all round player and should be starting as he is our box to box player that drives us forward. Rubin to come on with 20-30 mins left with less pressure on him to perform from the off would give him chance to make more of an impact.

The thing i find interesting is every team we play there fans believe rubin is head and shoulders above everyone on the pitch , was reading peterborough,s match thread from yesterday and they couldn't believe how good he was even though I didn't think he was particularly good yesterday

That's because they don't have an agenda against Rubin like some do

Ashford missed how many sitters yesterday and yet it's all Rubins fault

That's my point , I am one of those who believe rubin will go on to play at a higher level and pretty much all other teams fans agree ,so do a lot of our fans just criticize him because he's an easy target or do they just hold him to a higher standard because we see what he can do at his best and just wish he could do it week in week out

I think it's a combination of the points you just made
I think a lot of people expect Rubin to go on to better things so the expectation for him is a lot higher, which then makes him an easy target to blame if we have a bad game
But I don't think we were that bad yesterday just very frustrating

We created the chances but no one could finish them

Of course he's held to a higher standard half the board thinks he's Messi. Truth is he's got a brilliant touch can turn on a dime but pretty much everything else is completely inconsistent. All I know is our form was much better before his return
